Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston DataTraveler I - 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive DTI/8GBCustomer Review: Just fine for what it is and what it costs... Summary: 5 Stars
I've seen some disparaging comments about the speed of this series of devices relative to some other USB flash drives, and my experience bears that out somewhat in certain applications. (I have the 8 GB currently).
Someone needing top speed -- such as someone who wants to create (say) a bootable Linux drive to run from -- may be wise to pay more for a faster device. You do get what you pay for, and at this price point you're not going to have top-of-the-line performance. It's no different than paying $15,000 for a solid and reliable car and being unhappy that it doesn't have the performance of a $70,000 sports car.
But if you buy it only for occasional backups or to transfer files from one computer to another where a few extra seconds won't matter, it's perfectly suited for that task. So for the purposes I bought it for, AND understanding that price and performance are related, it's everything I needed it to be for my uses. If I wanted to boot Linux from it, I'd probably be a little disappointed and return it for a faster one.
Customer Review: I got one of the slow ones. Nearly useless Summary: 1 Stars
After reading many reviews here, it seems that either Kingston used more than one factory or chip or else some counterfeit ones are being sold. Why? Because there are two very distinct reviews for this device and I can't think of what else could explain it. My DataTraveller 8 GB is deadly slow. So slow that I wince when I want to transfer 500 MB of music files, something I could do instantly with my 512 MB Sandisk. I can burn a CD full of MP3s faster than I can write them to my DataTraveler. I don't have the patience to even think of writing 8 GB of music...
Unfortunately, I had it brought to me out of country so I can't return it. I chose Kingston for the name, but will avoid them in the future when I buy flash drives. Now I need to get something else that I can use for music. This one is going to be stuck in a box as a backup of some kind. Too slow for daily use.
One would hope that Kingston would have the appropriate quality control to maintain their reputation, but the one I got seems to be a lemon. Too bad.
Customer Review: Solid and Reliable 8gb USB Drive - Recommended Summary: 4 Stars
The "DataTraveler 8 GB USB Flash Drive" gives you a lot of storage for your money. I have carried this little drive with me almost daily for over a year and couldn't be happier with its performance and the convenience of having a fairly large flash drive on hand when needed.
I have not noticed any performance issues when transferring files (mostly videos, MS Office Docs, and Photos) either to or from this drive and have never experienced any data loss.
The drive also has two connection points for attaching a lanyard, a small one underneath and the larger one visible in the product picture. While I don't use them, it would be handy for connecting to a security badge, but I'm not sure that the plastic would be strong enough to take being attached to a key ring for very long.
The USB connector protective cap can be attached to the back of the drive for safe keeping while the drive is in use.
This USB drive has proven itself a real value for the price, highly recommended!
Customer Review: NICE DRIVE BUT THE CHEAPEST CASE YOU CAN IMMAGINE! Summary: 1 Stars
The drive is fine. But the case and cover for the drive is garbage. The plastic is so brittle, thin and cheap that it is worthless. The plastic is so cheap I wonder how anyone can say this drive is worth the money. You could not give me one of these Kingston Drives. If someone tried giving me a cheap Kingston Drive, I'd say no thank you. Buying a Kingston Drive is like knowingly buying trash.
Why buy a USB device made so cheap it starts self destructing the minute you take it out of the package.
Do yourself a favor if you are an active person and forget this junk! To bad there is no way to give a negative star rating for this trash. Technically the stoarge device is actually pretty good and fast too. The problem with the Kingston Traveler is you have a great storage device wrapped in a thin cheaper than garbage plastic case that can't be worth 5 cents on a good day.
Customer Review: Write protection all of a sudden - no switch! Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased this 8GB drive and now a month later am getting a dialog that the disk is write protected when trying to save or delete files. I never turned any write protection on and this model has no write protection switch on it. This is a huge issue with Kingston as you can find posts all over the net by Googling as well as a KB article on their website, KDT-092405-1. No resolution from Kingston, not even software to access the processer on the drive to disable write protection. their only resolution is that the drive is defective, thats it.
-Update to this, which I think is fair, this device does have this caveat but after going to Kingston's website to submit a trouble ticket, they issued me an RMA, I sent it in and they had replaced it. No issues since and I think it fair to say that I think this was a good buy despite the first purchase experience.
