Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston Apple 4GB Kit (2x2GB Modules) 667MHz DDR2 SoDimm iMac and Macbook Memory (KTA-MB667K2/4GR)Customer Review: Cheap and easy upgrade Summary: 5 StarsThere's an old adage in the computer world: "Buy more memory -- it's cheaper than therapy." This upgrade kit is the exemplification of that!
Open your Activity Monitor, and check your System Memory -- if you're starting to see "Page Outs" greater than 20% of your "Page Ins" during normal use, you should consider this ultra-cheap remedy! For those folks who want the ultimate in performance and consider this price to be "pocket change", if you're seeing *any* Page Outs, go for it!
To make sure this is the right memory for your Mac, open your System Profiler and look at your existing "Memory" entry to make sure that your system will use the 667MHz DDR2 RAM. Paying extra money for RAM that's spec'd faster than your system can take advantage of may not be the best use of your money!
The installation is a breeze on a MacBook like ours. Power down, remove the battery, remove 2 (really small!) screws and the shield they hold in place, pop your old memory out using the two levers, then reverse the process with your new memory. Power on, and check it out! Get back into Activity Monitor to see your RAM usage, or check with System Profiler to make sure it's all there.
You should be careful handling the RAM -- don't touch the metal contacts, only pick it up by the edges, and always make sure your other hand is in contact with the metal in your MacBook when handling these SoDIMMs to prevent any static jolts to the chips.
Pop out, plug in, and rock on!
Customer Review: to easy Summary: 5 Starsvery easy upgrade for my 13" macbook. just make sure you check your model with the apple website to make sure it will recognize the 4 gigs of ram. some of the older macbooks will not support 4 gigs of ram. i also upgraded the hard drive. went with a western digital 320GB 7200rpm. cheap upgrade easy to install and might as well upgrade the harddrive when you have the plate off.
Customer Review: Too Good to Pass Up Summary: 4 StarsMemory
I purchased this as an anniversary present for my Macbook Pro 15" (Intel). I purchased the laptop about a year ago but did not upgrade the memory, since Apple has no clue how cheap memory is in the real world and over charge for the upgrade.
Pro:
1. It was cheaper than through Apple. Apple puts a premium on upgrades when you customize laptops. This was a lot better price.
2. Easy to install. It took me less than 15 minutes to install and get the Macbook Pro to recognize it.
3. Twice the speed than I had before. You know how it is; computers are never as fast as we would like them to be. (I remember 128MB memory PCs, and I am referring to 2GB as "slower"). I can't say I'm blown away by the speed yet. I am confident that it is twice as fast and that I have maximized my memory. I'll wait for my next large Excel spreadsheet to see if there is something tangible I can point to.
Con:
1. None so far for the hardware itself.
2. Apple does not support it, so I have heard. I am keeping the ones that came with my laptop in case I have to get the laptop serviced. I will swap the old ones back in if I need to get the laptop serviced by Apple.
Customer Review: works perfectly in my macbook (white, early 2009, nvidia graphics) Summary: 4 StarsIt took me under 20 minutes to replace the 2x1GB that came in my macbook with this 2x2GB set. It would have taken 10 minutes if I had pushed the new soDIMMs in firmly enough the first time.
Customer Review: It works Summary: 5 StarsUpgraded my white MacBook from the standard 2GB to these. Did it myself, no problem. Have been working well for 2 months. Happy with my purchase.
