Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kingston 4 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card SD4/4GB

Customer Review: Kingston or Sandisk? Class 4 or Class 6? Decisions, Decisions.
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased some Sandisk shares when I read the company was the primary provider of flash memory cards to the entire industry. A bad investment in an industry where profit margins have dropped quicker than prices, but at least it taught me to look to Sandisk first. At the moment, however, Amazon Prime has no comparable values in the Sandisk line, and experience has shown me that Kingston cards, though perhaps more hastily manufactured than Sandisk, will perform equally well. Of course, you can pick up a Transcend card, which appears almost overnight to have become the 3rd main player, replacing clearly inferior products like Lexar. But my Transcend flash drive was like a Cracker Jack toy compared to my Sandisks, all of which I still have and use (the Transcend proved useless after two months on my key chain).

So at the moment this Kingston 4GB SDHC represents the most attractive offering for use with a Canon Elf. Just to give the consumer something to chew on, Kingston offers the card in a "faster" Class 6 edition, which is a couple of bucks more or less, depending on whom you buy it from. If you can save a couple of bucks, may as well go for it. Otherwise, ask yourself whether filling your flash memory card with thousands of images every day has led to exasperation with the slowness with which they transfer from your camera to your computer. I'm with the vast majority of Amazon reviewers, who apparently do not feel that being a mere Class 4 card user has limited their creative horizons.

Customer Review: SD Card worked twice, then failed for good. BAD!
Summary: 1 Stars

Purchased the Kingston SDHC 4GB mem card from Amazon in July, 2010. When I put it in my Panasonic FH20 camera I got a screen warning of "Insert Memory Card Again." That should have been a clue right there, but I complied and popped out the card and reinserted it. It work OK and I took a few photos and movies. I then removed it and placed it in the SD card reader of my 3 month old HP desktop PC, which read the card just fine and I was able to transfer the files to the PC's harddrive. The next day I was able to take several more photos and movies and transfered them to the PC OK as well. But then I noticed that the card no longer showed as a "drive" in Windows 7 as it had a few minutes earlier. I removed the card and reinserted it. The PC tried to access the card but was unsuccessful, but giving no indication of an error, and just not recognizing it. I then placed it in back in the camera and promptly received the "Insert Memory Card Again" error again from the camera. So from that point on the SD memory card has been dead.

I've used many SD memory cards and this issue is not user related. Based on the similar recent reviews here, I can see that Kingston clearly has a problem with this card. But at this point it's just not worth it to fight with Kingston or Amazon over my loss of $10. So I'll eat the loss, move on to another SD card manufacturer, and leave this review as a warning to others.

Customer Review: WORTHLESS!!
Summary: 1 Stars

This card was a DOA ... I have bought many other types of products from Kingston - from office supplies, electronics, etc. The only product lineup from Kingston that has proven to me that it is reliable are memory cards/readers, flash drives and other non-electronic items like mouse pads - UNTIL NOW.

The 4 GB SDHC class 4 memory card I received from Kingston was DOA. I tried this card on various equipment to make sure it wasn't my digital camera. All of my devices reported an error stating that this card was locked or the device wouldn't identify the card - even though the card was unlocked from the side switch. I couldn't even get my devices to recognize it to complete a format.

I instead bought a PNY 2 GB SDHC card for the same price and it works perfectly. I rather have 1/2 the storage capacity in the PNY than to be stuck with a product that is not reliable or worse DOA. This will be the last time I purchase a Kensington product... I should have learned my lesson from the last time I tried saving money by purchasing a keyboard/mouse combo from Kensington. Shame on me this time!

Customer Review: Card would not format
Summary: 1 Stars

I'll admit that i ordered this card due to it being 1/4 of the cost of the other cards. The cost of shipping was more than the card. From Amazon, i ordered an FE4020 Olympus digital camera on Black Monday. The card was for that camera. when i inserted the card, the camera queued to "format the card'. Selected 'yes' for 'No' turned off the camera. It never formatted. After recharging the camera and trying it again, nothing happened. I inserted the memory card from my old Kodak and the camera worked fine. So, i inserted the new card into the Kodak, which displayed message 'card must be formated'. Selected 'Yes' and the same thing happened. The card did not format and would not work in the Kodak either. I emailed the company to request a refund and have not heard back from them. It's been over 3 weeks. I've since bought a card from Best Buy which did not require formatting and worked immediately. Perhaps you will have better luck with this card than i did. It was a waste of $10 w/S&H.

Customer Review: Does Not work with my built in card reader or my Canon A540 Camera
Summary: 3 Stars

I just purchased a new Panasonic Lumix camera, and at the same time purchase 2 Kingston 4 GB memory cards. After taking 4 photos I pluged the memory card into my 5 year old computer's memory card reader. I was not able to access the photos I had just taken. No error message, but also no pictures.

To shorten a long story, I was told by Kingston Technology customer support that my computer is too old to read anything with more than 2 GB capacity. I put a 2GB card from my old camera in the Lumix, took some photos, and was able to read them on my computers card reader.

Bottom Line - There isn't anything wrong with the 4 GB memory card, but it would have been nice to know BEFORE I purchased the card that it wouldn't work on an older computer. Fortunately, the camera came with a USB cable to connect my camera to the computer and I am able to download photos from the 4 GB card that way. It's an extra step, but at least it works.
