Customer Review: Voice Memos isn't useless!
Summary: 4 Stars

Something that every new iPod owner thinks the first day is, "Voice memos? what a useless program because the iPod doesn't even have a microphone."

I never gave it much more thought than that. I don't really have much need for a mic on my iPod. Nevertheless, I found myself in the position where I needed to spend a few more dollars to get free shipping and I came across this mic.

It works great. There's not a whole lot to say. You just plug it into the headphone jack and record using voice memos or whatever app you are using.

A few complaints are that it plugs into the headphone jack, obviously, there's no other jacks. So you can't hear audio out while this is plugged in. You must remove the mic in order to listen to audio again, via speaker or headphones.

The other con is that this mic will not plug into your iPod with most cases or shells on. Because it is so wide at the base, most cases will not allow it to fully plug in. This could be solved with an adapter a male to female headphone adapter. This would not look all that sleek but it would give you better function.

As far as practical use I do not have any personally. But this is a nifty little device. You do have to be relatively close when speaking in it. You don't have to shove it in your face but it does have to be a foot or so or less when talking or it will become increasingly hard to hear on playback. I don't think, for example, you could use this to record a lecture or speaker that is many feet away from you. Although I haven't played around with testing it like this.

Anyway, for a few bucks you can't really go wrong. It all depends WHY you are buying it I suppose. It is what it is, and it does work well.

Customer Review: Great concept!

This was the only Mic I could find early last year. I had to document meetings that included travel and meeting new contacts. I first looked into buying the iphone headphones/mic pieces and found pickup was poor on one of the units I called in on. I even used it when I was stuck in the hospital to document the staff's comments when they came in for morning rounds.

This one I carry in a micro sized tin, to prevent from losing it. I had no problem making out the people, even if hey were speaking softly and had to interrupt on their incoming calls. I could still hear them over 2 FEET from my mic.

I had purchased it through a cell phone type site, and the seller shipped it from ASIA at 2 day speed, for a reasonable cost. I paid more for the shipping than the product, but I needed it just about that fast.

The only drawback on the iPod Touch 2g is the location of Apple's headset plug. Don't get me wrong, it works on it without a cable (unlike the older iphone), however you are pretty much operating the iPod like a micro-cassette recorder with what looks like an antenna sticking out!

After I was not using it many times a day, I was able to buy a 6 inch TRRS (Tip Ring Ring Sleeve) extension cable for the mic. That is a solution if you wish to have a little flexibility. Just remember you CANNOT use a standard stereo headset cable; you need the extra pin for microphones.

Customer Review: Works great on iPhone 4... but not with most cases!
Summary: 3 Stars

For the price, this microphone is a steal. It greatly improved the native recording sound quality of my iPhone 4, and I was able to "field test" this at a tech tradeshow with great success.

I was able to place my iPhone + microphone in a room, and record the conversations/sessions with decent clarity. I say "decent" as there was a slight "hiss" of ambient noise on the recordings. Simple enough to clean-up with audio-editing software for publication purposes, but quite acceptable for individual playback [eg., lecture recordings].

The only issue I had with the microphone really isn't a microphone/device issue per se but something that certainly impacts its use: the design of the microphone requires a somewhat "large" footprint when connected to the device, in that the bottom of the microphone (the largest, circular section) seats flat against the iPhone 4. Using a Speck HD Case, the cut-out for the microphone/headset port is not large/wide enough.

What this means is that I need to take off the case any time I want to use this microphone.

Thus, I can not recommend this unit for anyone who is using a full-factor case which partially covers the microphone/headphone port.

If you're using a side/bottom-only case or something like The Glif and looking for a cheap microphone for lecture recordings that's iPhone 4-compatible, then this will get the job done.

Customer Review: Great little mic
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this mic to try the recording capabilities on my iPod Touch 3G. I didn't think that I would have much use for a recorder but this was a cheap way to try it out just for fun. Wow, the quality of this little thing is quite amazing. I have since given my Sony tape recorder away because this is so much better.

There are a number of apps for the ipod Touch that will work with voice such as sending voice E-mails, Amazon has a great app for searching for products that you just speak the item you are looking for and it finds it for you. Also Google and YPmobile business search have voice search. Dragon search allows you to input what you are looking for and then lets you to search a number of social sites with the 1 input. Dragon dictation will let you dictate the text for an E-mail and then send it. The list goes on and on.

There are many good recording apps for the iPod as well and so far it has worked beautifully with about 12 that I have tried. My favorite is iSaidWhat as it has a mic gain feature on it that really amplifies the signal. Also you can edit clips and join them all together into one recording. You can also import songs and recordings through iTunes and cut and piece them together. Also makes for quick and easy notes on the run and you can sent the recordings to e-mail. Beats trying to type on this little screen keyboard. For about 5 bucks you can't beat it.

Customer Review: Impressive considering the price
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a Sony digital voice recorder with a Sony mic, and that certainly records much better than this microphone-iPod duo. But look. The iPod was not made to be a radio-quality digital voice recorder like the Sony was, and no one buys an iPod touch to record high-quality audio. For the iPod, this is just another one of many features. And there's a lot of iPod microphones out there, and some of them are very expensive. This one is cheap as heck, and worth every cent. I can't believe how well it works for the price I paid for it. If you want to record high-quality audio, put down the iPod and get yourself a digital audio recorder. If you want to be able to use your iPod's voice memo function or use it to record interviews in a pinch, get this microphone.

I've found that for recording voices from up-close (that is, if I'm interviewing someone and I stick the mic in their face) then this works just fine and I hardly notice the difference between the iPod and the digital voice recorder. The big difference shows up at a distance. My digital voice recorder records exactly what I hear--so if I'm sitting in a room full of people and I can hear the speaker just fine, then my digital audio recorder records the audio just fine. The iPod, on the other hand, isn't good at picking up voices from a distance. I don't know if this is the mic's fault or the iPod's fault.
