Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of All-in-One Travel Power Plug Adapter for US, UK, EU, AUCustomer Review: UK FAIL! Summary: 2 Stars
Caveats:
- Not a transformer - in the UK you get 220 volts
- Hard to close - not for those without function in BOTH hands
- Too big - tends to switch the power off in UK outlets
I ordered this power adapter exclusively to use with my laptop power supply during a short trip to the UK. Since everything else I brought with me charges off USB, I figured I'd plug my laptop in at night and use it as a central charging station.
While the locking/spring-loaded mechanism is kind of "cute", it was sometimes a pain to close back after using. It takes two hands to adeptly push in the blades while working the lock slider. I would imagine for older travelers or those without full function in both hands, closing the device back up would be impossible.
Also, the device was fairly large. Large enough to keep switching the power switch that seemed to be on every hotel outlet I encountered. It seems to be common in the UK for each power outlet to have it's own little on/off switch. This adapter is EXACTLY the right size to cause the switch to be depressed in the OFF position whenever it is plugged in fully. Also note that UK power outlets require the blades to stick in a certain depth in order to reach the power. In most hotels, if I pushed this adapter in far enough to reach the AC circuit it would switch the switch to the "off" position. I managed to get it positioned "just right" to get power from the outlet without turning the entire thing off.
In retrospect, I should have just bought a new mains cable for my laptop power supply. Which I ended up doing because my last night in London I fried my laptop power supply. I doubt it was the fault of this device. I think it was the cheap replacement power supply I brought with me or the hotel wiring.
Oh yeah - if you are traveling to England and staying in Jury's Inn, be sure to get an extra room key card. Jury's Inn (and likely other hotels) have a box next to the room door inside the room where you have to slip a room key card into in order to turn on the electricity for the entire room. I forgot to do this one night and woke to find my laptop battery completely uncharged! Without an extra key, you cannot leave things charging in the room while you are out.
