Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Keyspan by Tripp Lite PR-PRO3 Presentation Remote Pro Wireless w Laser, Mouse, Audio ControlsCustomer Review: Very nice presentation remote Summary: 4 Stars
I've used a variety of devices to control Powerpoint presentations over the years and this one is clearly the winner, largely because it is designed with little other than presentations in mind. I was particularly concerned that the device have a strong enough laser pointer to be useful at a distance and this one does so. It also works right out of the box (at least that's been my experience with both Win XP and Win 7 x64 - the same is also supposed to be true for Mac users).
Other Pros:
1. USB RF receiver stores in the unit and battery replacement (2 AAA's) is trivial
2. The slide advance/reverse controls are intuitive with a choice of using separate buttons (thumb position) on the top, or a "jog" button on the right hand side (for finger or thumb) - both options work really well
3. Nicely sized - small enough to carry in a pocket, but large enough to feel comfortable in your hand - somewhat like holding a conductor's baton
4. Well placed buttons for presentation start/quit (F5, hold down 2 secs for ESC), black screen, and volume (I haven't needed volume controls, so if that is a concern, look for what others experience has been)
5. The laser pointer can be used independently
Cons:
1. No case, so you must devise some means for stowing the device to keep from beating it up
2. No indicator light to tell you if you remembered to turn the device off or on (there is a transmit light that activates when you press a button)
3. Cursor control is with a thumb pressure button (on a raised bump towards the front, distinguishing it from other buttons), requiring dexterity to be used effectively (click keys are positioned further toward the front of the device so you won't get into them accidentally). By pressing in the jog button you lock on left click so you can do things like text blocking or use Powerpoint's highlighter option. Pressing the jog button again (or a click key) releases the lock. While this does allow one hand operation, it also requires the extra step of first using the jog button, then the cursor control for doing a click and hold action.
None of the cons is a deal breaker, although I've downgraded the device to 4 stars because of the first 2. The third one is a bit more understandable for this kind of device and Keyspan has provided a reasonable means for one hand operation - at least to date I haven't encountered a strategy in a presentation remote that's any better. All in all I'm quite happy with the device and reiterate that unlike some of the competition, this one provides a laser pointer that's potent enough to be effective.
January 29, 2011: I've now used this device for an extended 2-day presentation and it proved to be every bit as effective as I had hoped, even when ranging some distance from my laptop. The laser pointer is bright enough to be effective and I used it extensively. I did not use the "fancier" feature of the jog button click key lock down, which probably would only be of use if you use the device so often it becomes second nature. I will note that since the front end is shaped like the back, on a couple of occasions I held it backwards, a minor annoyance.
