Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kensington LiquidAUX Deluxe Auxiliary Car Kit with Remote for iPod; iPhone 1G, 3GCustomer Review: Almost great! Summary: 3 Stars
Pros:
-Drop it in and charge plus have audio out, no plugging any adapters into the top or bottom of the phone
-Great sound through the line out
-Steering wheel controller works fine for me, 3GS jailbroken running IOS 4.0
-Charges with enough current that I can stream pandora + run tomtom or navigon turn-by-turn nav without the battery draining, my old car charger would slowly let the battery die doing this.
Cons:
-Line out cord is too short and the placement of it doesn't make sense, in my truck (2002 Harley Davidson F-150) when inserted into the 12v outlet in the dash the line out cord hits the dash unless you plug it in upside down...Why not have a line-out PLUG on the lighter so I can plug in whatever I want and make it easier to hide the wires? Or have the plug come out of the front of the power adapter rather than at a 90* angle from the side where on a lot of cars I'm sure it hits things.
-The adjuster arm is way too short, if it was twice as long I would be much happier.
-In my truck the unit has to be installed with the arm facing straight off to the right from the plug so the line-out doesn't hit the dash, but doing this gives a lot of leverage to the weight of the phone and it swings itself down towards the floor while driving and going over bumps, requiring near constant adjustment to bring it back up to where I want it.
I am building a 'headunit replacement' in my car, because I couldn't find any headunit available that could do everything I wanted. Think of it like a carputer (computer in your car) but instead of a computer, your smart phone controls everything.
I combined this with
belkin bluetooth handsfree car kit

a Clarion 7 channel EQ

a Kenwood amp to power my JL Audio 6.5" component front speakers, and an MTX amp to power my Boston 10" subwoofer (which I already had in the car from my previous setup, a Pioneer Avic F700BT Double din Nav unit)
This dock works fine in my `97 Mustang for my purposes, but I was hopeful to be able to bring it over to my truck for a convenient dock/charger for long trips that I don't drive my car on. But it doesn't work very well for that, in the Mustang it holds solid and doesn't move, in fact I've already gone to a track day and this dock worked so solid I got some great data out of the Rev app on my iphone. I have an Otterbox case on my 3GS (the thinner model otterbox, not sure what it's called) and for the most part the adjustable sides of this are perfect, however if I don't hit the button on the bottom rear of the dock it's pretty hard to remove my phone, but that's not a big deal.
If I could get this same unit with an adjustable arm 3x as long, with a base that I could slip between gaps in the dash or mount with a bolt, that instead of a 12v plug had bare wires that could be hard wired anywhere and a line-out port near the base to more easily plug into a rca input with a good quality cable, I'd have the best dock I could think of, and this is almost there!
Description of Kensington LiquidAUX Deluxe Auxiliary Car Kit with Remote for iPod; iPhone 1G, 3GFrom everything we've seen over the past year or two, the near future of iPod and iPhone car integration can be summed up in three letters: AUX. Short for "auxiliary input," the presence of an "aux" port on a car enables an iPod or iPhone to make a direct wired audio connection to the car's audio system, delivering superior audio quality to FM transmitters and in most cases cassette tape adapters. Pricing is another advantage: you can get an auxiliary audio cable for between $5 and $15, versus $40 and up for good FM transmitters and $15-25 for tape adapters. Yet an aux port notably offers only an audio connection; as is the case with other inexpensive connection options, you'll need additional parts to charge, mount, or remote control the iPod. The Kensington LiquidAUX Deluxe delivers pure sound through your vehicle's stereo system while your iPhone and iPod charges. Simply plug your iPhone or iPod into the car kit using a 3.5-mm audio cable, and then insert the kit into your in-dash auxiliary port. Within seconds, digital-quality sound will be pumping through your car's audio system. Compact yet powerful, the car kit provides a secure location for your device to charge while giving you full access to your music files through a wireless remote control. | The LiquidAUX Deluxe provides wireless remote control of your music files, while keeping your iPhone or iPod securely in view. | The LiquidAUX Deluxe is tailor-made for the iPhone (1G and 3G); the iPod nano (1G, 2G, and 3G); all iPods (1G through 6G); and the iPod touch | Fingertip Control The steering wheel-mounted remote control is designed to be mounted with the controls on the interior of your steering wheel. The remote conveniently lets you play, pause, and skip music files with just your thumb, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel. Convenience The dock adjusts to fit the iPhone and most iPod models without removing them from the case, and a smart audio sensor controls the kit's power automatically. Kensington's LiquidAUX Deluxe Auxiliary Car Kit is compatible with the iPhone (1G and 3G); iPod nano (1G, 2G, and 3G); all iPods (1G through 6G); and iPod touch. Note: An auxiliary port in your car is required for the LiquidAUX Deluxe. Support Backed by Kensington's two-year warranty, the LiquidAUX also comes with free technical support. Important Note: Sound Effects When using an auxiliary device in the car, you might hear a slight buzzing sound, engine noise, or high-pitched whine. That is because your car model has a grounding issue between the audio system and the power socket, which causes a whining or buzzing sound when you drive. This sound is not caused by your Kensington product; however, Kensington has an easy solution. Simply purchase an automotive ground loop isolator for your car that is compatible with a 3.5-mm jack. This simple tool will enable you to use your music in a safe, hands-free environment. Kensington can provide you with a ground loop isolator free of charge by calling Kensington's Technical Support team at 1-800-535-4242. Please provide the serial number of your LiquidAUX product when you call Technical Support, and the company will arrange to ship you the ground loop isolator.
