Customer Review: Secure but Tricky
Summary: 5 Stars

It took a lot to get this to work. I read the instructions for how to get it to lock, and it still wasn't working. I had someone else try, and it still wasn't working. In the end, I brought it to the store and they made it look easy. Its easier to get it to work laying flat then holding the security port up. I should have figured...

The actual mechanism seems to work by putting the T shaped bar into the standard security port on the laptop, and then the key rotates the little pins so the bar cannot turn. The other end gets looped around something else. It's easier to lock without the rubber around the end, but then it will chafe the metal around the port. My laptop (Gateway P-6860FX) has some wear around the port from all my amateur attempts to get it working.

Now that I have it working, it locks securely, provided I can find something equally secure to lock it to.

Customer Review: Great Lock!
Summary: 4 Stars

Highly recommend this lock! It's 6 feet long, so you can stretch it pretty far. You can wrap it around anything you want as well. There's an optional locking device you can buy that will stick to the back of a desk, for example.

The only reason this didn't get 5 stars: It seems like a flimsy system. I'm not willing to stress it to end up ruining my computer, but I worry that if someone really wanted, they'd be able to just break my computer and run off with the laptop.

That being said, the lock does give you a sense of security. I'm in an office where there's a ton of foot traffic, and yet many people do not lock their computers. I can feel confident that if someone wanted to steal a computer, it wouldn't be mine, or if it was mine, they would have to make a scene to break the lock.

Anyway, you'll feel a lot more secure with this lock.

Customer Review: Better than most
Summary: 4 Stars

I read the good and bad reviews here and decided to try it out. I got it for a 15" MacBook Pro unibody (mid 2010). The quality looks and feels decent, not sure why some people said it looks cheap. Seems pretty heavy-duty to me. As for the rubber gasket coming off? Yes, it can be taken off fairly easily, but I haven't had it come off by itself. The only slight problem is it covers the CD/DVD slot just the smallest amount. I haven't actually tried ejecting a disc to see if it hits the lock or not cuz I'm worried it may. Other than that, I'm happy with it.

Someone stated their laptop was stolen because they left it unattended. Locked or not, why would you leave anything valuable unattended??? They should know if someone wants to steal something bad enough, they're going to get it no matter what. This lock is a deterrent, not a guarantee against theft.

Customer Review: Pretty useless on a MacBook
Summary: 3 Stars

The lock itself is sound (I suppose). But I just want to let all the users of the popular MacBook (obviously myself included) not to waste their money on this one. The soft matte plastic of the black macbook around the kensington lock hole does hold up to the force required to engage and disengage this lock. After just two gentle lock and unlock motions with the hole for this thing on the side of my MacBook is disfigured and about double it's original size. I can easily see that if I used this thing daily to lock my MacBook to my desk (like I was intending to do) I'd soon have huge hole in the side of my notebook and a useless lock. Apple and Kensington what were you thinking? Thanks Kensington for ripping an eyesore into the side of beautiful black MacBook! Fortunately, if my rebate goes through I'll get half my money back.

Customer Review: difficult to operate, but works with MacBook Pro
Summary: 2 Stars

To lock, just attach and turn the key, right? Not with this lock. It turns out there's a trick: you have to push in and turn the "T-bar" first so that the rod is lined up straight between the two prongs -- it can't be perpendicular or it won't work. So if you want to keep the key on your key ring, you'll have to deal with lining up the T-bar every time you insert the lock. (If you have the key loose, you won't have to remove it after you remove the lock from the laptop, and then the T-bar stays in position.) The "manual" covers none of this.
Before I learned how to use the lock, I called Kensington and the representative said the MacBook Pro doesn't have a K symbol, so their locks won't work with it. That turns out not to be true. I went to a Mac store, and they use this lock with the MacBook Pro. So do I.
