Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kensington 64343 MicroSaver DS Keyed Notebook Computer LockCustomer Review: Solid investment in security Summary: 4 Stars
At slightly thicker than a standard network cable this Kensington laptop lock is portable, discrete, and easy to use. The steel cable is solid and enclosed in a braided metal sheeth, which is covered by clear plastic. The connection between the cable and the lock is solid and secure. The cable is made to swivel around the lock, making it very manuverable and easy to use on my desktop at home, work, or while traveling.
The lock fits easily into my laptop's security slot and has a rubber gasket that forms a nice seal between the lock and the side of my laptop. This prevents the lock from rubing, scraping, bending, etc. the side of my labptop. The keyed lock (as opposed to a combination) is convenient as I keep one key on my regular key chain and a spare in a safe place. I would recommend this item to anyone who wants an affordable way to secure their laptop.
I gave this item 4 stars instead of 5 because it met my expectiations in a laptop lock but did not offer any surprising features or functionality that exceeded them.
Customer Review: Excellent Lock! Summary: 5 Stars
The Kensington Microsaver DS lock is really good. Right out of the box you can tell its very strong and i feel confident this lock could stop all but the most determined thief from walking away with my laptop. (Given a good amount of time and the right tools - any lock can be broken) Notebook locks are, in effect, a visual deterrent. You're average pick up and go with your laptop thief wont bother with trying at it, they'll just move onto something easier. The lock design is really good, much better then the classic design that has videos all over the internet showing how it can be picked with such high-end objects as a piece of cardboard from a toilet roll or a hollowed out ball point pen. The rubber surface where the lock comes in contact with the notebook is definitely a plus, won't be doing any damage to your notebook. The lock itself again, feels and is strong. Definately something you want to look into, I spent a lot of time comparing this to the regular Microsaver one as well. The DS is worth that extra $8 I paid for!
Customer Review: good Summary: 4 Stars
This is my first laptop lock. I've simply never needed one before. But this was for work.
I'll be honest, this thing is only going to deter a spur of the moment thief. Anyone with some time and good cable cutters can get at this. It's only a deterrent and not a guarantee. Withe that seemingly negative intro, I need to say that it seems a decent product. I would buy another one. It's sturdy and easy to use. I like the key rather than combination version but that's simple personal preference.
Then only (extremely minor)complaint I have is about the cable clip that it comes with. It's meant to allow you to roll up the cable and clip it all together when not in use. I bought this for permanent use. The cable clip does not come off and I find it hard to hide the cable as much as I'd like to. Then again, maybe the whole thing is a big clue to a their that it's watched.
Either way, a decent product.
Customer Review: Works as adverstised, feels a little bit cheap. Summary: 3 Stars
Have been using it since August (about 6 months) and it works pretty well.
PROS: very secure, works pretty well, has a nice rubber gasket that keeps the laptop from getting scuffed.
CONS: gasket comes off occasionally, lock seems to jam occasionally.
OVERALL: worth the money.
FINAL VERDICT: would recommend again
REASON FOR PURCHASE: Highest security out of all the locks I could find.
I bought it because there were a lot of web articles out there about how easy it was to pick BOTH:
1. Combination Locks; AND
2. "Circle Key" Locks (they kind that the key looks like a tube and the lock fits to match the key.)
Both of these are apparently very easy to pick (go on to YouTube, you'll see what I mean) so I went with the most secure one I could find, and that was this. It is one of the few laptop locks with a real, cut key that locks and unlocks.
Customer Review: Cute color Summary: 3 Stars
I chose this one because the red matched my notebook. I like how this lock had some color to it.
& because I herd combos and tubular locks were easy to hack into.
I've never owned a laptop lock before, but this one looks and feels high quality. It was, however, extremely flimsy on my toshiba netbook. It fit more snuggly on my mom's sony vaio, although it still wobbles a bit.
Key part kind of scared me at first for a brief moment, but then I figured out how to use it. You have to make sure you push it in ALL the way (you'll hear a click short of) to unlock it. But don't worry, it seems legit and won't break or get stuck.
Cable is long and strong.
It is a high quality lock, but I think it would fit more better on certain laptops than others, but in my situation it didn't fit my toshiba too well. So overall I'd give it a 3 stars.
