Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kata KT D-3N1-30 Sling/Backpack (Black)Customer Review: Very well thought out design, but with a couple of small issues Summary: 4 Stars
This bag is absolutely hands down the best full size backpack I've ever used.
So, first start with the good:
+ Fits 1D Mk II (QR plate and neckstrap attached) with 100-400 attached with lens hood reversed, 70-200mm f/4 IS, Tamron 1.4x Pro Teleconverter, Canon 580 EX II, Canon 40D, 28mm f/1.8 (hood reversed), 50mm f/1.8 II in the main compartment as well as 3 spare 1D batteries, 4 40D batteries, 40D charger, 1D charger, set of AA batteries in small pelican case, AA battery charger, wallet, keys, phone, memory card wallet, spare caps, memory card reader and cables in the top compartment. If you need a bag that will carry a LOT, then this is it.
+ Low profile. This bag is shallow (just deep enough to fit my 1D or 40D with grip), which is great as it keeps the weight close to your body and avoids imbalance issues that can cause back aches after using for an extended period of time. Another big bonus to being low profile is that it easily fits in airline overhead bins.
+ Waist support straps are well padded and help distribute the weight over the hips and back evenly.
+ Shoulder straps are very well padded and can be used criss crossed, traditionally, or as a left or right sling. Buckles that hold the straps are very strong and well made.
+ Entire bag is made of really good quality fabric that is lightweight and durable.
+ Bright yellow interior makes finding smaller items in the bag very easy.
+ Can be used as a rolling bag with small luggage roller (fantastic for airport travel).
+ Rainfly(!!) Every camera bag maker should be putting these on their bags. Absolutely great idea and really gives you a much better peace of mind when heading out into the wild blue yonder. They are cheap to make and really a great selling point for the customer.
+ Some others have said that the dividers are not enough to prevent your lenses from "slipping" from one compartment to another when the bag is not loaded, but I have noticed the exact opposite. I keep my 100-400 in the center compartment layer and it never slides down even when the layer underneath is empty.
+ One very cool thing about this bag is that you can rearrange the dividers to make the "quick access" from either side, which is great for lefties and for righties alike.
+ Crisscross strap position is very nice for longer hiking treks for keeping your arms free and for keeping the weight from becoming too much of an issue.
Cons:
- Bag is not well supported fully loaded as a "sling." Not necessarily exclusive to this bag, but slings do not carry heavy weight well and get very uncomfortable very fast and this bag is no exception when used as a sling.
- Shoulder straps are hard to adjust to be shorter. I'm a 5'9" woman with a short torso, and the straps even fully adjusted as short as they go are a little long for my liking.
- The bottom equipment compartment has three "layers." The bottom two layers are easily accessed, but the top layer underneath the top of the equipment flap is difficult to access and you sometimes have to remove whatever's in the center compartment to get what's in the top out. Not a good design move there Kata.
- No tripod holder. You have to buy it separately, which is somewhat annoying and cheap on the part of the manufacturer. It should be included as it is with most backpack systems on the market. No excuse.
- No water bottle holder (another "no excuse" situation)
My overall grade is an A- for this bag. It's great, very comfortable, extremely well made, and overall about as good as it gets currently with full size camera backpacks. Love the 2 compartment design which makes hiking with this bag a wonderful experience. I love that it holds my very large camera (1D Mk II) comfortably with a longer lens attached. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and will keep Kata in mind for future camera bag purchases if I ever need one!
