Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Kaito Electronics Inc. KA1102BLK Digital AM/FM/SW World Receiver with SSBCustomer Review: A mini-portable Worldband radio that actually works well. Summary: 5 Stars
Since the features of the radio have been covered already by the other reviews, I'll just review the performance real quick. I've owned countless SW radio over the years, and never had a mini-portable that worked well. Until now. The KA1102 simply works very well. Will it replace my Sony 2010? No, of course not. But I will be taking my KA1102 with me when I need a small portable. SW reception is surprisingly very good. The narrow filter is better than on radios I own costing 3 times as much. Even when the bands are crowded, the narrow filter allows me to listen to stations 5kHz apart. Amazing on a radio costing $75. The only slight negatives are: MW performance is average, and the radio's functions take a little time to get used to. ..This radio will be one of my "keepers".
Customer Review: Instructions Stink Summary: 3 Stars
The radio seems to be o.k. except for the fact that it turns itself off approximately 3 seconds after the power button is selected. The instructions are atrocious and probably are best relocated to a bird cage or outhouse. I'm still trying to comprehend how to adjust the auto turn-off feature. I haven't reached the point of "slamming it against the wall" but that may happen soon. It's obvious that the radio is well constructed and the sound is fine for the three seconds it's on. Unfortunately, the accompanying instructions are the worst I have ever encountered for a radio of this type. Maybe the factory could have someone from Panasonic or Sony write future instructions.
Customer Review: Awesome portable for the money Summary: 5 Stars
The Kaito/Degen 1102 is a fantastic bargain. I paid less than $50.00 for mine and I listen to it all the time. Its many features allow for a wide range of listening options, including all shortwave bands, AM/FM (with excellent performance on both the MW and FM bands) and it has an SSB function which is quite easy to tune and very stable. However, unlike the review above, please note that this radio does *NOT* have synchronous detection.
I have owned many shortwave portables and a couple of tabletop radios in my life, and I must admit that I've never gotten such an excellent radio for such a low price as the DE/KA-1102. Order one; you won't be sorry.
Customer Review: Excellent radio for the price Summary: 5 Stars
As you can see, most SWLers rate this radio pretty high!
It's a good radio at a great price.
I think so mush of this radio, I bought two(2), silver and black.
There are better radios, but not for the price.
I like its size, sound, sensitivity, and selectivity.
It works well and its rechargable batteries charge inside the radio. (on or off)
The radio is ssb capable but a little hard to tune in.
If you want small, look at the G6. If you want more bands and perhaps a better radio design, checkout the G3 at about twice the cost and no batteries.
The KA1102 is and excellent radio for the money!
Customer Review: outstanding Summary: 5 Stars
I like this radio. The sensitivity is terrific. I compared it with my Sangean ATS 909 and Icom R71A. It was much better than my Sangean and almost as good as the Icom in sensitivity. It's about half the size of the Sangean and with no protruding controls to break off. A really solid feel to the case. There are some operational features that are at first odd, one page only where you can activate SSB e.g., some pages that support auto scan and others that don't. But You quickly sort out the pages the way you want, store your frequencies how you want. The built in charger and the backlite are neat too. Really an outstanding radio.
