Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Jenis J-C450D-P-B Professional Battery Grip for Canon XS and XSi Digital SLR Cameras (Black)Customer Review: Great grip for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I was a bit wary buying this grip at first given the description is rather cryptic, but turned out to be a great purchase so far. I feel the other reviews have some misleading information, so I'll try to clear some things up.
- The grip does come with a battery backup that will retain settings. It is on one side of the part that replaces the battery in your camera under a rubber cover. There is a piece of plastic you have to remove to activate the battery.
- In the same area as the backup battery there is a place to store the original battery cover.
- Not shown, but as expected there is a screw hole for a tripod mount.
- You have to have both LP-E5 batteries installed for the camera to get power, so if you only have one make sure to buy a second one. UPDATE: I tried this again when I finally needed to charge the batteries and it did work with a single battery in either location. Not sure why it didn't work the first time. It's still nice to have both batteries populated because you'll get a massive number of shots between recharges.
- The LCD display on the grip is somewhat hard to read straight on, but can be viewed easily at about a 30-45 degree angle toward the bottom. It is also susceptible to being pressed on, though you have to do it on purpose since it is recessed in the grip and you won't be pressing on it with normal use.
- The LCD has a nice blue backlight that lights it up adequately.
- The shutter button feels just like the camera's. The dial rotates more easily than the camera, but that's OK for me since the camera's dial feels a bit too hard to rotate and get results quickly.
- The other camera control buttons also have the right 'feel' to them, not too hard and have adequate feedback.
- The instructions for setting the programmable timer are a bit cryptic, but I got the basics and figured it out pretty quickly. Here is my translation:
1. Set the mode switch to timed mode (all the way to the right). This will change to the display to the first setting which is the countdown.
2. Press the SET button to set the countdown time, which can be set in hours (bottom left), minutes (bottom right) and seconds (top right). Press L.ADJ to adjust the 1's digit and H.ADJ to adjust the 10's digit for each of these settings. Press SET to move on to each element (hour, minute, second).
3. Press SET again to move on to the amount of time you want the shutter to remain open. Again adjust each element (hour, minute, second) with the L.ADJ and H.ADJ. This I believe only has an effect in manual mode or if wanting to use autofocus (see below).
4. Press SET again to move on to the number of photos you wish to be automatically taken. This will decide how many times the program should loop. It starts at the beginning each time with the countdown then keeps the shutter open for the programmed time then loops again until the requested number of photos is taken.
5. Press ST/SP to start the timer. Press it again to stop the timer. Starting again will start where it was last stopped. To reset the program move the mode switch to the left and back to the right to reset. It will remember the last program entered and start at the beginning again.
- The directions claim for the program to work the lens must be in manual focus mode. This is not entirely true. If you make sure the 'shutter open' time is long enough for the lens to achieve focus you can still use autofocus. I tried it with 5 seconds of time, though it looked like 1-2 should be adequate as long as the subject is easy to focus on.
- Another review claimed that this grip locks out the camera's screen from turning on. I encountered this as well, but only when using the timer mode. If I move the mode switch back to another mode the my camera LCD turned on as expected.
Description of Jenis J-C450D-P-B Professional Battery Grip for Canon XS and XSi Digital SLR Cameras (Black)Due to the convenience of deleting unwanted photos and inexpensive media storage, we take a lot more photos than the film era. Today's digital camera puts a lot of stress and loading on the battery, hence the battery grip becomes an essential accessory to most of us. Jenis battery grip uses the same build material as the original manufacture on all its product lines, to ensure a long time trouble free operation with your beloved digital SLR camera. The build quality and ergonomic not only matches the original equipment, there are some added functions on the higher end products that are designed with the professionals in mind. The extra features are not available either from the original equipment or the other battery grip on the market. The S model (Standard) provides the same function/capability as the original equipment. It can take up to two Li-ion battery or 6 to 8 AA batteries (depending on the model) to provide extra power reserved for longer shooting time. Depending on the camera design, some can also increase the continue shooting speed. There is an extra vertical shutter button to provide easy operation when shooting in portrait/vertical position. The control wheel provides the same functions as the original control wheel with easy access when operating in vertical position. The P model (Professional) has all the features in the S model but with some advanced essential functions. There is a clock which not only display time, but also serves as a self-timer or long exposure shutter control that can provide up to 99hr 59min 59sec delay time/B shutter. The SD model (Super Dual Storage) has all the features the P model has except the remote capability, but adds two extra high speed CF slots for people who like to take a lot of photos on a trip. A larger B&W LCD screen is provided to display some of the important shooting information. The grip also does some basic file operation. A high speed USB2.0 connection is also provided.
