Customer Review: Good Bluetooth Speakerphone
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my first bluetooth device. After reading many reviews about blue tooth earphones and speakers, I did not have high hopes of finding a good one right away.

This speakerphone works great! It charged up quickly (I bought the AC/DC converter offered with it) and then paired with my phone (LG Shine) easily. It clips to my visor and looks sleek. It has a large multifunction button that turns it on, answers calls, hangs up calls and also initiates voice command if pressed quickly.

The phone stays paired until you move out of range or turn off the Jabra SP5050. The range is pretty far. I had my phone sitting on my desk near the window facing the street. My car was parked on the street in front of my house--they stayed paired overnight and drained the batteries on both devices. I now make sure to turn off the Jabra SP5050 when I leave the car. It does turn itself off when the phone goes out of range for 15 minutes in case you forget.

The volume is an issue as other reviewers have mentioned, but it depends on your car and your hearing, too. I have a newish BMW--I have no problem hearing people and everyone reports being able to hear me very well (even on the freeway). I do, however, have the device set to the loudest possible volume. I am only 30 and a mommy so my hearing is really good! My husband has an "oldish" BMW and my guess is that on the freeway, he would not be able to hear a thing with this device. It seems that it should be engineered so the loudest volume is louder than most people need.

I highly recommend this speakerphone unless you have a car with a loud cabin.

Update (12/31/09): Now that I've had this for a while, there are a couple things I'd like to add to my review and unfortunately, my rating is going down to four stars. I still like the device, but the low volume issue has gotten to be annoying- It is just barely adequate- and that's too low if there is any distraction or other noise in the car. Another issue is the one big function button- It has no "click-feel" so you don't know when you've pressed it "enough". And since the volume is low, it's hard to hear the signal that it's answered. I frequently hang up on people by pressing the button twice while trying to answer calls.

One positive note- the thing takes so little energy that I have only charged it up twice since owning it. I've charged it so infrequently that I can't find the charger cable.

Overall, I still prefer it to an earbud or other wearable bluetooth device, but I hope that Jabra updates and adresses these issues in the next model.

Customer Review: quality product
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't normally write product reviews, but when it comes buying time, I read them avidly. So, this time I thought I would help out a prospective buyer by sharing my thoughts on the SP5050. I recently bought one after having tried the VR3. I wasn't pleased with the speaker quality on the VR3, so I traded it in at Costco for the Jabra SP5050. One of the reviewers here wrote that the speaker volume was not loud enough. I have a Blackberry Pearl and found that the speaker volume was more than adequate and projects a clear, quality sound. In fact, I turned it down a notch while driving. At about 60 MPH, people I called said they couldn't hear any background noise, only my voice.

One thing I particularly like about this unit is the ease of use. I wish the volume buttons were situated differently, but otherwise the layout is great. The main button is actually the entire bottom portion of the unit. You just "tap" when a call comes in or when it's time to hang up or transfer a call. You don't have to look at the unit to work it, and there are no annoying blinking lights while you're driving at night.

It paired instantly with my Blackberry, and it's quick. Pairing time once I turned it on was almost immediate. Its slimline design makes it unobtrusive while driving. The Costco version comes with an AC adapter so I can charge it at home.

If I had one complaint about this unit, it's the length of the charger cord. It's just short enough that when I plug it in my car lighter with the unit attached to my visor, the cord is stretched fairly tight. I don't anticipate this causing any real problem, though.

Finally, I actually researched bluetooth speakerphones pretty carefully before I bought this one. Blueant looks good, but was only available over the web. Motorola didn't have good reviews. Parrot was too expensive. And VR3 was not a quality product. For the money, the SP5050 is a great buy. CNET.com gives it a 7.0 (very good) rating. I'm satisfied and I think you will be, too, with this quality product.

Customer Review: Pleasantly Surprised! Works very well with the 3G iPhone.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been trying to decide for several weeks which bluetooth speakerphone to purchase and have been reading a lot of reviews, including an OEM add-on kit, those popular here on Amazon, and also the one bluetooth speakerphone available in the Apple Store. Several of the devices are feature rich but alot of those features were not supported on my 3G iPhone except by third party add-on applications.

I had not read the reviews about the Jabra sp5050 until at Best Buy a few days ago. I noticed the sp5050 had been marked down to less than $60 so I used my iPhone to get on Amazon and read the pretty good reviews here. Some of the systems I've been considering were several hundred dollars so I thought what the heck, for $60 I would give it a try.

I took it out to the call, plugged it in and quickly and easily paired it with my iPhone. I made a couple of calls; one to home and talked to my wife and she didn't even know I was on a speaker. The other call was just to leave a voice mail on my office phone and I couldn't tell any difference between my iPhone or the Jabra speaker.

The features that are supported by the iPhone work well. Voice dialing is not supported by the iPhone presently so I can't comment on that. This bluetooth speaker is not what I consider feature rich but it does what I need to do. I have my iPhone in a cradle high on the front of the dash just beyond the steering wheel, so dialing on the iPhone large numbers is not an issue.

As stated above, purchasing the Jabra sp5050 possibly saved a couple of hundred dollars or more and I'm pleasantly surprised how easy it is to operate and the clarity of the sound...and it works with my 3G iPhone. It does more than I expected for the price, thus the 5-stars.

Customer Review: Works fine, but read the manual!
Summary: 3 Stars

The first unit I received worked for a day and then refused to power up. Customer service at Jabra was a waste of time (1.25 hours on hold; I finally gave up), and you can't even email them your question without giving them every piece of personal information--name, address, phone, and so on--which seems unnecessary.

I returned the unit to the seller, JoWow, at my own expense, and received a new one, which works. The most important thing to know before you try to use this is that you MUST read and learn the difference between a "tap" a "press" and a "press & hold" on the device, otherwise you will forever be hanging up on people, not able to voice-dial, and so on.

I drive a pickup that is relatively noisy in the cab at highway speeds. However, I am able to hear people and they can hear me, which is more than I can say for some of the earphone units I've tried.

One gripe: when someone calls you, your phone starts ringing AND the unit starts ringing. When you tap the device to answer, your phone stops ringing, but the device KEEPS ringing for a few seconds, during which time you cannot hear the caller and they cannot hear you. I have had people hang up on me because they thought the call was dropped, but in reality, I was saying "hello! hello! hello!" but they couldn't hear me until the device stopped ringing.

This delay is annoying, and I am not certain if it is related to the phone I am using (LGVX8300 from Verizon) or if it is a function of the device that is just stupid. I'm going to keep it because other than that it does work well, and bluetooth earphones drive me crazy.

Customer Review: Great speakerphone
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased the Jabra SP5050 for a couple of reasons: 1) municipal law 2) on the road too much for work, my arm gets tired of holding my phone to my head 3)my hands are free to operate vehicle. The Jabra didn't disappoint me. I am Regional Manager and log about 500 to 750 miles per week. Most of my contact with people is from my car while I am in between locations.

I ordered it from Amazon and the delivery was lightning fast. It was on sale at the time which meant I paid $30.00 less with Amazon.

The speakerphone is great. I didn't want the bluetooth headset because I didn't want anything in my ear. They look stupid and I didn't want to look like a kid. I searched the internet and liked the feedback I found on the Jabra. At first I wasn't sure I would like a speakerphone and it does take some getting use to but I became very comfortable with it very quickly.

Here is what I like about it.

1)The setup was seamless with my Blackberry Pearl which recognized the unit quickly. While I have a speakerphone on my phone I was always holding it up to my ear because of the volume. This is not the case with the Jabra.

2)The sound level of the Jabra is loud enough including highway driving in my SUV (Envoy, doesn't handle wind too well)and it can be adjusted with
