Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JLab J3 Micro Atomic In-Ear Earphones with Travel Case - Jet BlackCustomer Review: I Miss My J2's :( Stay away from this new model Summary: 3 Stars
I bought these after my cat ripped apart my beloved J2's :(. At first I posted a raving review about these because I hadn't really given them enough time to break them in. It's been about 3 months now and things haven't gone like I was expecting them to, so I redid my review with my more in-depth knowledge of these monitors.
Durability/Build Quality
First of all, they look a lot cleaner and high tech than the old J2's. The earbuds themselves seem to be a little more durable than those from the J2s, however the cord seems to be a little thin. I was surprised to learn that the J2 cord is a little thicker and what feels to be a lot more durable. Now this really isn't the biggest deal in the world since they came with a cool little hardshell case that I always keep them in when not in use. This way I never have to worry about any physical damage and makes me feel a little more secure. But that's about it for the good.
Sound quality
As far a JLabs go, I was surprisingly disappointed. A little crisper than my good ol' J2's, but other than that, they're not worth much. My problem is they seemed to have turned the bass down quite a bit. The bass level on my J2s wasn't spectacular by any means, but they really did get the job done. They were just right for my tastes. These however, seem to lack the "liveliness" that my old headphones had. They just aren't fun to listen to. Treble is punched, mids are sloppy, and bass is seemingly nonexistent. Don't get me wrong, the highs are beautiful, and you really can hear ever sound that the artist intended you to hear. Much better than any apple earbud without a doubt, but I just can't get over the fact that they took such a great product in the J2 and blew it with this guy. Right now I have my old J2s in (only one earphone because the other is ripped apart) and am realizing what I've been missing. The power and fullness of the J2's stage presence is turned to screeching highs and muddy trebles and...well you can't hear the bass so I don't know how to describe it. That in itself is big enough of a turnoff to keep me away from them. These can't even be saved by EQ, no matter what trebles are too high, and when they are turned down they sound muddier and sloppier than the trebles. I never thought I would say this about a Jlab product but these truly sound like "20 dollar headphones," unlike the J2s, which sounded much better than their price would reveal.
Noise cancellation
Bringing back a little bit of positive news. Noise cancellation is far superior on the new J3's than on the older models, the pads create more of a seal in your ear rather than sitting in there. Kinda like Skullcandys except they aren't crap (But really they kind of are). But that brings about another negative. The cord makes SO much noise when it hits and rubs against things. It really causes a distraction while listening to any kind of music on the move and it actually blocks out some of the stuff you actually want to listen to, the music. [[EDIT: I read that wearing them around the ear prevents most of the cords movement noise. I tested this and it is 100% true. Wrapping the cord around your ear rather than letting the cord just dangle gets rid of a considerable amount of the noise you don't want to hear.]]
Other notes
As read in the manual, these DO require some burn in time to perform their best, so I left my computer running one day and connected these on repeat. Sound has improved a little bit but still nothing that excites me. Also I didn't realize this when I bought them but Jlab has a "burn-in" process on their website. A nice little addition to their very good customer service.
Conclusion
As expected from JLab, you get a great price, very fast shipping, and exceptional customer service. Now go buy yourself a pair of J2s so you as well can experience these benefits. If you're worried about budget, the J2s are even cheaper than these! They're overall a better product and definitely more worth the price. Plus the J2's offer sound that is actually fun to listen to.
Another edit to give some advice
After taking my old J2s and giving them another listen, I realized how much I was missing out on. I looked into the J2s really closely to see what it was that made my J3s sound so shallow compared to the older model. I noticed that the pads on the J2 were not as deep as those on the J3. I didn't know exactly what that meant so I decided to test it a little bit. So what I did, was took the pads I had used on my j2s and threw them on my new j3s. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was relatively happy with the results. The J3's presented a SMALL bit of the livelyness that they had previously lacked. I put on some of my heavier music and, while not overly thrilled, it really did improve the overall power and deepness compared to the original pad's high-pitched, shallow output. If you happen to have these and a pair of broken J2s laying around, give it a try. It's not mind blowing by any means, but when your not happy at all with them at all the littlest positives can be relieving. You may sacrifice a small bit of isolation but the J2's weren't terrible isolators to begin with so it's not too big of a difference anyway.
