Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JBuds J2 Premium Hi-Fi Noise-Isolating Earbuds -Onyx BlackCustomer Review: Try Another Brand Summary: 2 Stars
The people who manage the health club I belong to in Irvine (LA F. . .) think that they are running a disco, and they play the club music so loud that it rattles the windows in my car all the way in the parking lot. All efforts to get them to lower the volume have failed. Their response is, "If you don't like it, join another club."
So when I saw these earbuds advertised with "noise isolation," I thought that I had found an answer to my problem. I have been using a Sennheiser headset for some time, and although the sound quality is great, the only way I can block out the noise coming from the club PA system is to crank the volume way up.
The JBud Premiums arrived promptly from Amazon (great service, as always). They come with three sets of rubber fittings (small, medium, large) that are supposed to allow users to find the best fit for the ears. The problem is that these fittings aren't based on human physiology and are more properly sized for critters. Thus, the sizes are actually as follows: nat, hummingbird, chipmunk. If you have human ears, you'll have a hard time keeping these buds inserted unless you remain absolutely motionless.
The noise isolating system works great, provided you crank up the volume to maximum and run the risk of breaking your eardrums. So in this respect, they are about the same as my Sennheiser set. As for sound quality, these JBuds are amazing, provided you like tinny music of the kind you get from two tin cans connected by a long piece of string. There's no bass or mid-range, and the treble is distorted.
So for $30, what you end up with is something that you might use as part of a mobile, if you like that sort of thing. But I can't recommend them for people who enjoy music.
Customer Review: Satisfied and would recommend to most people. Summary: 4 Stars
I never really used earbuds before I got these so I spent a lot of time trying to find a set that had good reviews and I could feel confident ordering. I narrowed it down between these and a few other pairs and ended up getting 4 sets of these due to a buy one get one free sale at the time that made it an irrisistible value. Overall, we am satisfied with them and would recommend them to most people for the following reasons.
-They are much more comfortable than I was expecting an in-ear device to be and they stay in my ear without shifting or falling out, even during activies.
-Noise reduction is good enough to almost or even completely silence a normal volume conversation with somebody next to you without even having any music playing.
-Volume seems to be ok and hasn't been a problem for any of us, though this depends heavily on the device you are using.
-The sound quality isn't perfect but it is still very good and should be more than enough for almost anybody, especially if your device has an equalizer or presets. You really do NEED to burn these in though. When you first get them they will sound very muffled and quite horrible but after a while the sound will completely change into what it is supposed to be. I simply left our sets playing random music all night long and would recommend something similar to anyone who gets these.
-The cord and everything else seem to be good quality and appear like they will last. Of course I don't know for sure because they are new. I only wish the plug was a right-angle plug or that there was a decent adapter available because the jack on my phone is on the side it's an odd shape to place in my pocket with this straight plug sticking out of it.
Customer Review: Nice earbuds that actually fit my ears Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased these j2 buds from an Amazon Lightening Deal. I am glad I did as they perform respectably and this is the only pair of ear buds I have tried which actually fit properly in my ears.
I typically use ear buds for running and as such always opt to purchase ones that have a clip around the ear that do not totally cover the ear so that I can still hear loud noises such as a car horn or the like. While at work, I want to block any external noises as much as possible. I was never able to get the Apple ear buds to fit properly in my ear and they would pop out every time I moved my head -so they were trashed immediately. The J2 fit perfectly in my ears when selecting the middle silicon insert. They are extremely comfortable and help block unwanted external noises.
I am not an audiophile, but, for me, I think these ear buds provide excellent sound quality, considering I am using mp3 audio files. I hear the guitar riffs and subtle nuances in the music which I would seldom notice with other similar ear buds. I find the music is crisp and clean.
I appreciate the straight plug - I have difficulty using earphones that have the right angle plug when using with my ipod when in its protective case.
The manufacture recommends breaking in the ear buds (something which frankly I never knew was necessary), which I did. I am very pleased with the sound quality after the break in. I wish that they would manufacture ear buds that could be used for running -- with a design to reduce the possibility of sweat reaching the speaker part, and a way to attach them to the ears.
I would recommend the J2's, and plan to purchase another pair (or upgrade to J3/J4) in the future.
Customer Review: Poor Quality, Poorer Service Summary: 2 Stars
My J2s were a replacement from JLab for the 2 sets of Jbud originals that died too quickly. The build quality of the J2s seem much higher than the "J1s". They feel more solid. There are joint reinforcements in the appropriate places. They are the most comfortable earbuds that I have ever worn. The sound quality was really good. The cord length was perfect to me. I'm a tall guy (6'3") and I had no problem with the cord in normal use or on an elliptical. I even liked the color. Mine were the mint green, but I don't see those anywhere any more. I really enjoyed these earbuds. But after a little over a year, they started having the same problem that my 2 previous pairs of "J1s" had. One speaker would stop making sound depending on how you jiggled the cord near the speaker. So, apparently a wire was partially broken near the plug. At this point, I was just done with JBuds. Three pairs of earbuds self-destructing in the same way in 2 years seemed to be too much of a coincidence. And I really pampered the J2s. After 2 "J1s" tore up so quickly, I wanted to make sure it wasn't me or how I was caring for the earbuds. So I made sure that I wrapped them loosely and kept them from tangling.
I'm giving them a 2 star rating because they were excellent and fun...while they lasted. And while JLab support was excellent back in the "J1" days, it is not what it used to be. I recently decided to give JBuds another try and purchased the J4s because they seemed like they would be nearly indestructible. Those died after 2 months and I have been trying to get JLab support to tell me how to get a replacement. I recommend for people to not purchase this product or any other from JLab.
Customer Review: product recommended Summary: 4 Stars
I posted the following under Daniel Lebryk's 11/26/08 review but am posting this separately as well since I want to reflect my rating of 4 versus his 3 stars:
I also went ahead and ordered a set based on the positive comments about JLab's customer service and the headset overall good performance: I told Brian Molina, the general manager who corresponded with me, that it is impressive to get prompt and caring feedback, quality customer service that is not provided much anymore. The only negative for me is that the noise isolation is limited when used by itself (with no music), otherwise it works well in this area too. I don't like to play music too loud, but my family had to essentially face me to let me know they have been talking to me! The headset turned out very fine for sound quality with the songs and music pieces I listen to. I compared this product with the Panasonic noise cancelling earphones RP-HC55 and the Sennheiser NoiseGuard headphones PXC 250. In a recent Consumer Reports article, the
Panasonic is rated above the Sennheiser unit. Based on noise cancelation/isolation alone, I'd rate the Sennheiser as best, then the Panasonic (to my own surprise) only slightly above the JLab product. For music, there are slight differences among these three units, based on different songs/music, but to my ears, not a discernible difference. I definitely recommend the JLab product for its overall good quality, excellent customer service, and less than 1/3 the cost of the Sennheiser product for music, and music & noise isolation purposes. For noise isolation/cancellation alone, I recommend the Sennheiser product, but one has to place purpose above cost for this feature.
