Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JBuds J2 Premium Hi-Fi Noise-Isolating Earbuds -Onyx BlackCustomer Review: When have I EVER used a Treble Booster? Summary: 2 Stars
I have a 120GB iPod classic, and I listen to it fairly frequently, usually with the bass turned up. I recently had to switch to my generic Apple ear buds because my Sony ear buds left bud died on me. Those had been my second pair of Sony ear buds, and I had been fairly happy with them, but after listening to some friends Skull Candy ear buds, as well as some Bose and Shure ear buds, I decided I'd look around before I bought another pair.
[...]
When they came in the mail, I quickly pulled them out and plugged them into my iPod, and decided I would see how good the bass was with some good old school rap. And I couldn't believe my ears. In a bad way. The sound somehow sounds faded. To compare it to something else, it would be a black shirt which has gone through the wash too many times. I thought these 80 dollar buds would be phenomenal, and I'm sitting here wanting to switch back to my Apple ear buds! With frustration, I remembered a review that said I might need to "burn in" the ear buds. So I let my iPod play at medium volume for a full 24 hours. And I came back to them still sounding like a muffled old stereo. I even started listening to some Coltrane, and thought, this must just be an old recording. But I switched to my broken Sony headphones, and they sounded BETTER than my new J2s.
My final hope would be that the sound would be decent with the treble booster on my iPod turned up. This actually helped some, but then I got so disgusted with the fact that I couldn't even hear the guitar solos in Avenged Sevenfold, that I got my Apple ear buds back out of the drawer. I am very disappointed with this purchase. I wish I could get my money back.
The reason I give them 2 stars is because they look decent and they do block out most noise. But even the looks are a little iffy, plus the chord feels like the cheap ear buds that come with a new phone. My recommendation would be to buy either the Skull candy 20 dollar ear buds, or good ol' Sony is always worth a look at. I'm considering saving up my money and buying some higher end Shure buds. I don't think the Bose ear buds would be worth the money.
Customer Review: Excellent Earbuds for Color Optons and Price Summary: 5 Stars
I am a picky earphone and headphone user. I use them heavily for ipod and ipad, for games, youtube, and music. I have tried various brands and models of headphones. Some of them I returned quickly due to bad sound or quality (if they were over $15 otherwise I kept them) I raelly could not use Ipod/phone headphones properly because they have average sound and fall out of my ears constantly so I was looking for some earbuds.
Given mixed reviews on Jbuds J2, I was worried about them, but I thought I'd give them a try. So far, after a month of use, I am very happy with them. They may appear larger in size than, for example, Sony earbuds, or some other ones, but this is not causing any trouble because they're made of plastic, which is very light. The part that goes into the ear is of standard size. You also get 2 additional pairs for tips, small pair, and larger pair.
The cable used is of nice quality, similar to the ones Apple uses, but less rubbery. It has same thickness though. This mode, J2, has no volume control as advertised. The lower frequencies gives a very strong base without distorting the music. High frequencies sound average. At least I could not hear much difference in higher frequency. I don't listen to it much, but party-style rap music sounded really nice with lower base shaking my ears if I cranked up the volume. Music before 1990s in general sounded normal since it mostly doesn't have much base or big sound range. It also depends on the songs you play. You need to make sure they're actually good quality recordings with high frequency (if you're not familiar, right click on mp3 in computer and see properties. Get at least 164bit songs)
Also if you're testing any headphones, and especially these do NOT plug them into your speakers connected to pc, the speakers will always create background hissing. Connect them directly to the front of laptop/pc/apple.
Do not be turned off by simple packaging and lack of any carrying pouch or whatever it is many brands include. These sound really good. If you like colorful earbuds, you can see yourself how many colorful neon colors are offered.
Customer Review: Disappointed so far Summary: 2 Stars
I bought these as inexpensive replacements for the original earbuds on my iPhone 3G. Although I like the pause button on the Apple buds, they hurt my ears. I read the reviews here -- many of which touted the comfort of the J2 buds -- and decided to give them a try. I should note that I'd planned on getting the Sennheiser CX300-B Earbuds (Black), but I prefer equal left- and right-side cord lengths, as well as a longer cord overall, neither of which the Sennheisers have. Last, I was impressed by the numerous responses from J2 to posters here who expressed dissatisfaction. You don't see that kind of customer engagement very often, and it was encouraging.
On the positive side, as others have commented, these earbuds are comfortable and easy to fit snugly into ears of different sizes. They also appear pretty durable, as earbuds go (I tend the destroy these things frequently and appreciate solid construction). They crank more than enough volume without substantial distortion, taking into account the driver size, and the mid-tones are relatively rich for earbuds. They're definitely better on the mids than the stock Apple buds or the Sony buds I've tried.
On the negative side, the high end seems attenuated and muddy; the stock Apple buds sound crystalline compared to these. And, the bass is nonexistent. I don't mean weak or sloppy: It sounds like I'm using an equalizer with the bass totally knocked out.
As I said, I read the comments here from J2, and I've gone pretty far in fitting and "burning in" these buds, much more than I've ever fussed with other headphones or earbuds. In fact, these are now completing the third straight day of looping through my entire music library, on both the iPhone and my PC. It seems like the volume has increased a bit, but the bass is still lost, and the highs are still muted. Very disappointing.
I'll give these a full week, which should be more than enough time for any needed break-in. If there's no improvement, they're going back to Amazon.
Customer Review: Beautiful Design, Comfortable, Ok Sound Summary: 4 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I love listening to my iPod or iPhone, with headphones. I have used the stock earbuds as well as V-Moda's Vibe Duos, so I was somewhat skeptical to try a product that cost about 1/4 the price of the V-Modas.
However, the JBuds J2 impressed me, for the price.
What do the JBuds J2 do best? Design. The earbuds look and feel nice, and they come beautifully packaged. Secondly, these are incredibly comfortable earbuds. They come with three size earbud inserts, and I always need the smallest one. They feel comfortable, and they stay in my ear. I could wear them for hours, unlike V-Moda's, which tires my ears out after a while. Furthermore, unlike V-Modas, moving the headphone cord, or when it touches your clothes, it does not echo up through the earbuds, which is quite annoying. No such problem here.
Sound Quality - This is the area where the V-Modas certainly beat these JBuds J2. However, the J2's certainly deliver adequate sound for the price and the convenience of the other positives. Furthermore, they are significantly more comfortable than the stock iPod earbuds and provide a bit better sound. Of course, the sound insulation they provide is also a great feature because it helps block out sounds around you, which the iPod Stock buds do not do at all. They just lack a bit of fidelity and seem to soften the music a bit too much for my ideal liking.
Overall, the JBuds impressed me. If you want to move to a in-ear earbud with an affordable price, these seem like a decent choice. They are extremely comfortable in your ear, stay in your ear, block sounds around you, look good, are of good quality, and sound ok. Sound quality isn't always the most important factor when choosing an ear bud. JBuds J2 deliver ok sound, while the overall product is so solid because of the comfort, look, and quality. These are not to be dismissed.
Customer Review: Excellent sound at reasonable price Summary: 5 Stars
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I own several sets of earbuds and earphones ranging from the stock ones that come with an iPod Nano to decent Sony earphones to some high-range earbuds from Shure. These JBuds J2 earbuds cost much less than the Shure and only a little more than low-end earphones from Sony, but have really good sound.
Just a reminder, these are earBUDS not earphones. Many people use the terms interchangeably but since these are earbuds, this means they must be inserted into the ear canal for use, whereas earphones typically sit on the ear and just slightly touch the ear canal. So if earbuds bother you keep that in mind. Because they are inserted in the canal the upside is they won't fall out and they do cancel out all outside noise.
With less expensive earphones, typically you have to have them turned up a decent amount to hear the full range of tones. But the J2 are vibrant and full from deep bass up to the highest highs even at low volume.
The package includes the earbuds as well as 3 sets of different size earbud covers, classified as small, medium and large. My small and medium covers came in a plastic bag and the large set was attached to the J2's in the box. These covers are small pieces of a rubber material which help the earbuds fit comfortably in different size ears. I usually use medium size covers on my Sony earbuds and used the medium on the J2 buds also.
The earbuds had an overall cord length of a little over 4 feet. The "Y" length from the buds to the point where the cables become one is about 20".
I have tried the buds on my iPod, my Creative Zen and my Blackberry Curve and the sound is superior on all three to the stock iPod earphones as well as the Sony Fontopia I have, and the J2 performance is comparable to the much more expensive Shure earphones.
I highly recommend the JBuds J2 earbuds.
