Customer Review: Great Earbuds

I bought these as a Cyber Monday deal right after Thanksgiving. Here's a review from your average iPod user who uses them to listen to just about any type of music from hard rock to classical. I've previously owned Sony EX MDR-EX36V/BLK Earbuds except without the volume control, and Apple earbuds before that. First off, I want to say that these are leaps and bounds better than either of these buds. I'll break it down based on comfort, construction and design, and sound quality.
These earbuds are extremely comfortable, and given the different sized ear pieces, it's very likely that you'll find the right fit for you. This may not be the case for everyone, as shown by many of the negative reviews. For comparison, I am a 20 year old female, and the midsize one fits perfectly. I believe the J3 buds come with 4 inserts if you're in dire need of a good fit. I find that the buds fit perfectly, even while running at the gym (never fall out) and even when using for extended periods of time. They never become uncomfortable. I could never wear normal Apple earbuds for longer than an hour without getting sore ears, so soft buds are a must for me, and these are perfect. 5 stars for comfort.
They are built much better than the previous earbuds I owned. The cord is thick and one of my favorite points is that it has reinforced joints, right where the cord meets the jack, where the cord meets the buds, and where the cord splits. It gives a much sturdier feel to them. One (minor) gripe I have is that the jack is not angled. It plugs straight in as opposed to being at a right angle like many jacks, but some people may prefer this. 5 stars for construction and design for being sturdy and well-built.
The sound quality is great, but by no means would it satisfy an audiophile. For your average listener though, they're perfect. At first, it worried me because the sound was muffled and crackly, but after reading the manual and various reviews, I tried the suggested "burn-in" process using a tool on JLabs webpage. The headphones sound better and better each day (I've had them for about a month). Now I plug my old headphones and ask myself... "Why was I listening to this $#&@ before?" Another great thing is that although these do not cancel noise, they are great for isolating noise... Sometimes too great! I can drown out a lot of noise with these. I'll do a quick breakdown of the sound quality of various types of music. I'm no audiophile, but I do know what sounds good.
Using iTunes set to full volume (no equalizers) with computer volume set to 10%
Soft Pop - "Secrets" by OneRepublic
Midranges are crystal clear and sound perfect. Bass SOMETIMES crackles, towards the intro, perhaps my copy of the song. Bass however, is strong and stands out. Upper ranges do not stand out as much due to the strong base, and should due to the vocals and high string parts/piano parts.
Suggestion if you have problems like this: Set the equalizer in iTunes (right click song, "Get Info" and use the drop down menu that is under the "Options" tab) to "Bass Reducer" -- Once you do this, all the ranges are evened out and sounds GREAT.
Rock - "Papercut" by Linkin Park
AWESOME bass. Great buds for rock music. Electric guitars sound crystal clear and vocals (including screaming) sound great. All ranges sound great.
Classical - "Brandenburgisches konser nr1 Allegro" by Johann Sebastian Bach
All ranges sound great. Upper ranges are very clear, everything seems well balanced. Impressive sound.
Electronica/Techno - "Sandstorm" by Darude
Bass very strong which is great for electronic beats. Higher ranges sound clear and not muffled at all which was an issue I had with my old buds. Sound quality is great.
Hip-Hop/Rap - "Daydreamin'" by Lupe Fiasco
Similar issue to "Secrets" that I mentioned before where the bass was very strong, to the point where it was drowning out higher ranges. Probably would be a common occurrence with hip-hop beats. I used the bass reducer feature in iTunes and it sounds perfect now.
Summary: For music where strong bass is a great plus such as rock and electronica, these buds will be perfect straight out of the package. If you have music that has strong bass parts but where the focal point isn't so much the instruments but vocals such as hip-hop, rap and some pop songs, you may find the bass reducer to be a helpful tool. It will adjust the sound quality so your favorite rapper or vocalist isn't drowned out by the powerful bass these buds give out. 4 stars for sound simply for the bass being TOO strong and the ranges for these buds not being balanced under all conditions without some adjustments on my part. However, it's an easy fix, and for that reason and all the other reasons mentioned above, these are easily the best bang for your buck. They're no Bose headphones but for your average listener wanting to spend no more than 20 bucks, it's definitely a great purchase.
