Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of JBuds Hi-Fi Noise-Reducing Ear Buds (White)Customer Review: Great for the price Summary: 4 Stars
I've always had problems losing the little rubber ear tips that go on the Sony Fontopias and have found that I can order them separately online - they seem for fall off very easily for me but since my ear canals are smallish, they always fit well. The JBuds also fit very well, but *for me* the ear tips/rubber ear caps seem just a touch stiffer or slightly thicker than those on the Fontopias. The Fontopias were slightly more comfortable, but the JBuds are pretty darn close.
I did but these because they were well priced and white, but Fontopias also come in white.
Mmm, there is a noticeable difference. First, the cables are a bit stiffer and not as "relaxed" as the Fontopias - meaning, if you coil them up up crinkle them up in your bag andx then pull them out to wear, they retain that crinkled shape for a while where the Fontopias don't seem to do that. However, what I didn't like about the Fontopias was that the cables were coated with a sort of tackiness/stickiness that made untangling a challenge at times (if you didn't use the cord case that came with the ear buds).
There is a nooticeable difference in sound. I get deeper sounds with the Fontopias, more bass. With the JBuds I hear crisper, lighter tones. I guess it depends on what you're listening to and what your preferences are. I like the JBuds now but that was after a couple of weeks of breaking into the new sound change.
I had a problem with the white plastic coating pulling away from the ear bud at the base and exposing the wires. I think the Fontopias are probably built better overall.
The jack that plugs into whatever device you're plugging into doesn't bend at a 90 degree angle like the Fontopias, where the bent part ends up parallel to the jack surface. It's bent more like 110 degrees so when you plug it in, the bent part isn't parallel to the device but sticks up a bit. Hasn't been a problem so far.
No case.
Customer Review: For me, these are great! Summary: 5 Stars
I have recently bought several other headphones and keep looking for "the ones." (Scosche Iuhp4 Retractable Earbud Headphones and Sennheiser MX75 Twist-To-Fit In-Ear Stereo Sport Headphones from Amazon as well as Basic Phillips in ear headphones from Walgreen's) I have had probs with other headphones with chord length, comfort and durability. These are the first of the in ear bud types I have tried. I really like them. They come with three sizes of earbuds so you can change them out if they don't stay put very well. The sound is great to me. They do dampen outside noise, which is great to help me focus at work, but not so much that I would feel unsafe or unaware walking around at night. Also, I really liked the chord length since I use them both for my iPod and for my computer, which sits on the floor by my computer. Finally, I prefer the standard Y chord shape rather than the new shape where one side is longer than the other. These have the Y shape. So all around these are my favorite so far. The thing I will be looking for is to see if/when I lose the detachable bud parts, which I have had problems with on other headphones. All in all though, 2 thumbs up.
7/29/08 Update: I still have these headphones and have not lost the detatchable earbuds. They still sound great and are so comfortable I keep them in at work even if I'm not listening to anything just because I like the noise buffer.
1/25/10 Update: Just had to go back to find these again because they are just now starting to have problems with the sound cutting in and out due to the wires not connecting right by the jack. Ordering another pair for sure since they worked so well.
Customer Review: Reasonably good, with a design improvement suggestion. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought these as iPod replacements, after reading numerous reviews.
Comfort: I wear them to sleep most of the time. I have no problem with them falling out of my ears. They're very comfortable and almost form-fitting. These are also more comfortable than my Sony active noise-cancelling buds, and the left and right wires are the same length, which makes much more sense. (See negatives below.)
Function: They do block out most unwanted noise, which usually consists of household noise (TV in another room, dishwasher, snoring wife), pretty well.
Acid test: If I were going to use them in a vehicle (airplane, train, bus), in a loud city environment, or in a stadium or arena, I would much rather use active noise-cancelling ear buds.
Sound: Sound reproduction is good - better than the OEM iPod earbuds, and better than a $40 pair I bought at Radio Shack a bunch of years ago, which I now use on my computer.
Negatives: As another reviewer commented, the left and right buds are marked so small they're virtually invisible. I tried marking them with a fine-point Sharpie, but even permanent ink rubs off (great finish on these earbuds), so I cut a tiny piece off a clear band-aid and stuck it to one of them, and can now feel which is left or right without having to bother straining my eyes.
Suggestions to manufacturer: Put a raised Braille-type dot on one, and two dots on the other. Can do this most easily by drilling a tiny hole in the mold. This wouldn't be a major feat of engineering.
Recommendation: I'd say this is a good buy. I am not sorry I bought them.
Customer Review: "Indispensable" Quickly Becomes "Disposable" Summary: 1 Stars
As a true lover of a great variety of musical styles, I, like so many others, find the standard-issue iPod earbuds to be rather lacking in performance.
So one day, I decided I would invest in a new set of earbuds. These seemed like the perfect match--supposedly great audio quality, at least some "noise-cancellation," and a comfortable fit for a surprisingly low price. I took a chance, and, to be perfectly honest, I was VERY satisfied for at least two months--or maybe even three. The audio quality is ten times as good as that of Apple's buds, and comfort is incomparable. Noise cancellation was sufficient for me at least, but that's no scientific analysis: the rubber tips simply seal off your ear canal, essentially muffling outside noise. I was really delighted with my purchase, until one fine day when the left bud went "BLIK" and suddenly stopped working altogether. It was possible to achieve intermittent activity when I took the cable and pressed it gently where it meets the neck of the jack, but I wasn't going to put up with that. So, thinking I could get another pair in few days and forget all about this mishap (perhaps a QC oversight, I told myself), I did and I was happy once more, but of course, that same thing happened again (just a few minutes ago). After reading a few other complaints about this very problem, I knew I needed to sound off as well.
Sure, they work well, but what seems indispensable is, in the next moment, as good as garbage. I can assure you that the low price is evidence of the product's disposable nature.
Customer Review: Was I expecting Too Much? Summary: 3 Stars
The earbuds that came with my shuffle, Nano and touch were all the same. And none of them fit and stayed in my ear. I had to buy those foam covers for them just to get them to stay put.
So I purchased these ear buds to replace them.
First, the sound is better. It is not super great, it is just simply "better." Louder. You know how you sometimes place your finger on the standard ear bud and push it gently into your ear, just so you can hear better? That's what these sound like all the time. They don't reduce all the outside noise, but do a good job.
I don't have to buy foam ear bud covers anymore. That's $10 a pop (for the set) and I was always losing one.
They hurt my ears when I'm laying down. I always listen to podcasts at night while I'm falling asleep. These hurt when you lay on them, because they push further into your ear. They also come out just as much as the standard iPod buds when you're laying down.
The cord is somewhat flimsy and cheap feeling. The cord is too long. There is no sliding cord-keeper piece, which helps to keep them untangled. This, coupled with the thin and plastic-y feel of the cord makes them tangle a lot.
But for $20 I can't complain too much. They stay in my ears and sound better when I'm out walking around or doing household tasks. That's why I bought them. Someday I may buy the V-Moda Vibes or something from Skull Candy. For now, I switch back to the standard ear buds from Apple when I use them at night. You just can't sleep on these.
