Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)

Customer Review: Amazon misprints Ruby Red as "rugged" when it's not...
Summary: 3 Stars

Something I've noticed after watching the Popular Mechanics drop test video in which the eGo camo survives a 15ft concrete-floot falll and yet the other Iomega drive, the "Iomega eGo Portable Drive", doesn't survive a 9.5 carpet-floor drop...

Well, I was attracted to the eGo after that video and thus searched for it here at Amazon via "Iomega eGo RUGGED".

My order read "Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)".

But, please note ,the above is a misnomer. What makes eGo devices "ruggedized" is the "Power Grip Band," which sells for an additional 15$ at Iomega. My eGo did not come with such a band... I'm not sure whether the "camo" color or brand comes with the band standard, but the ruby red certainly doesn't. (Actually, the Camo does come with the band as listed on its Amazon page as a part of its unique "box contents"... other colors do not list the Power Grip Band.)

The Ruby Red eGo brand is nonetheless supposed to be extra durable; it does have "Drop-Guard" technology, whereas other Iomega brands such as the Prestige are supposed to be less durable with only "Drop Shock" technology. The Iomega site advertizes the Prestige as "durable" and the whiskey flask looking portables, which includes both Camo and Ruby Red, as "super durable" -- with or without the power bands.

Anyhow, the power band is on the competition-winning HD portable that survives the drop tests in the Popular Mechanics video. But, again, this band is not included as a part of the "Iomega eGo USB 2.0 320 GB Rugged Portable Hard Drive (Ruby Red)" item.

Buyer beware...

Customer Review: Pocket friendly, handsome and functional.
Summary: 5 Stars

All portable hard drives are not the same. Once one has whittled down the plethora of external drives on the market using capacity, weight and dimensions as parameters to a few suitable competitors, it is left to the equally important choices of color and shape.

The internals of the Iomega drive have been described in countless on-line reviews and in computer magazines: they do the job they were designed for and quietly too. As for the appearance of this unit, color is a hard choice - there are eight of them! Each to his own, but as you are reading this review you also found Ruby Red to be the most appealing. Factor in its ergonomic pocket friendliness and this is the winner. The quality of the exterior is high and the semi-matt finish does not retain finger marks, so it looks good on ones desk all day long. The unit needs two free USB ports to supply the required power and these should be adjacent to each other in order to use the included cable. If not, a hub or a longer Y-cable will be required.

This hard drive has a sturdy feel and a high quality finish. It is pocket shaped with no sharp edges or corners. This reviewer found no fault in the two months the unit has been in daily use.

Customer Review: Iomega 320 eGo Drive works great
Summary: 4 Stars

Received the Ruby Red Iomega 320 eGo Portable hard-drive from Amazon in very short order (typical for Amazon) and found: 1) the drive was packaged well (to decrease likelihood of shipping damage); 2) the drive was easy to install/format; and 3) transfer times are certainly sufficient for my purposes, and I almost immediately transferred nearly 100 Gigabytes (Gigs not Megs) of data without any delays or problems (I have used the stored data extensively and have not detected any recording errors).

As I almost always find with electronic products, I could have purchased the product nominally cheaper from some other website but Amazon's willingnesss and ability to resolve, both quickly and satisfactorily, any issue that might arise keeps me coming back to Amazon.

I recommend this product but it is always important to fully understand the details of what a product can and can not do and evaluate your own needs before relying on someone else's recommendation. For instance, in this case I use the drive exclusively with Windows XP and Vista so I have no inpout on how the drive might function in a MAC environment.

Customer Review: Beauty of this external drive is only skin-deep
Summary: 1 Stars

This is my third Iomega external drive - the first two ran like champs, and did trouble-free automatic backups with software that was easy to install and low-maintenance. Alas - they wouldn't support my new laptop,so I bought this model.
The backup software for this drive is hard to find on the Iomega site, hard to optimize, and a pain to use. The support material on the website is hard to navigate. (I wouldn't even have known the drive needed to be optimized for PCs if I hadn't read these reviews on amazon.com.)
I actually returned the first one of these I ordered because I couldn't get the backup software loaded and running per Iomega's instructions. I still can't get daily backups to run quickly and properly, and usually end up reverting to manual backups. What's the point??
User-friendly: NOT. I'll probably replace this drive soon with a different brand just because of the software issues, and give this one to someone who has time to fiddle with the nonsense. Iomega really dropped the ball on this one!

Customer Review: Drive failed within 1 hour
Summary: 1 Stars

Bottom Line: Drive failed within 1 hour. Will return to J$R World for replacement or money back, not sure yet.

Longer Story: Was excited about getting a product that offered both Firewire and USB capabilities. I purchased this drive partly due to the overwhelming favorable reviews. Maybe I just got the one in a million bad drive, but not sure I'll go back to Iomega so quickly. This device failed within the first hour after beginning to backup documents. My computer somehow suddently failed to recognize the drive during the transfer. Moved drive to two other computers and somehow the drive could be recognized but not used. Kept asking to be formatted. When I'd attempt to format the device it would finish by saying drive was not successfully formatted. There was no way to get around the problem or fix it. Drive couldn't be formatted and drive couldn't be used without being formatted. NOTE: I also tried it back on the same machine where it originally failed. Still didn't work.
