Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network AdapterCustomer Review: Gigabit is superb Summary: 5 Stars
Intel Pro 1000 desktop adapters work with Linux straight out of the box. You plug it in the PCI card slot inside the computer case and it will automatically be recognized by the Linux Kernel on boot, and configured as eth0. On the downside, with Microsoft Windows XP you need to install drivers. I wasn't surprised when I had to change my router (switch) to be gigabit compatible, and all the other machines needed gigabit cards, which they all had already, to get a gigabit network. Gigabit is 1000 base T, or ten times the speed of 100 base T, the current world standard. Intel makes great equipment, and most of it works with Linux. I don't endorse any operating systems, as this is a personal preference. I only think people should know the truth.
Customer Review: No drivers or documentation Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered this item after a lightning storm disabled the built-in ethernet port on my PC (and fried my old wireless router). It arrived fast from the Amazon seller but there was nothing in the box except the card. As an Intel product I expected a CD-ROM and instructions. I installed the card and the PC P&P found the new hardware but no driver. So I went to the Intel web site and after a bit of searching found the driver download file and finally the PC could install it. Unfortunately, it worked only intermittently for me, the PC kept saying it was unplugged, so after the new wireless router arrived I set up the wireless adapter which works more reliably - and no cable for lightning to affect.
Customer Review: Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network Adapter Summary: 5 Stars
I recently upgraded my multi-computer, multi-platform system from 10/100 to 10/100/1000 and needed new ethernet card for all of my computers. I found on Amazon the Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network Adapter. I was happy because I know intel products usually work out-of-the-box for any os system. When I got the product I found not only the ethernet cards but driver cds in addition. I slipped each card into my computers and as I thought no problems. No need for the provided cds either, Windows Vista easily downloaded drivers and I was on the net in minutes. Also my Linux boxes had no problems with drivers. All machines where up an running without a hitch. Great product!
Customer Review: Will not work with 64bit PC with more than 3gb memory Summary: 3 Stars
Very easy installation, quality looks good, Windows 7 recognized it instantly and installed the drivers without issue. However this adapter would not connect to our router, a fairly new router at that. After hours of checking and rechecking every possible problem, I stumbled across the answer. This LAN adapter will not work properly with a Windows 7 64bit PC with more than 3gb memory. Once I pulled 1gb of memory, viola! We were up and running.
We are returning this one and trying a different manufacture. Sadly becuase quality on this Intel LAN looked good.
This review is in case anyone else is experiencing the same problems.
Customer Review: Works As Expected Summary: 5 Stars
This network adapter was purchased to replace an old and defective 100mbit network card. This card installed flawlessly into my Linux PC and almost installed automatically. The setup for this device was very straightforward and I know that I can rely on the Intel brand to stand up in terms of quality and longevity.
I would highly recommend this card to anyone who runs a Linux PC and who needs a network card. While I cannot vouch for this card working in a Windows OS environment, I'm rather confident that if it can run in the Linux environment, it can run just as flawlessly in Windows.
