Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of IOGear eSATA 3 Gbps Dual Port ExpressCard/34 GPS702E3Customer Review: Macbook Pro Success! Summary: 5 Stars
I have to be honest, I just needed this card to format my WD "My DVR Expander", because it only uses eSata.
Following a tip from another reviewer, I popped in the supplied CD (which doesn't mention Mac support at all, even though their website does) and installed the driver for "3132 driver, non-RAID". FYI, this is a 2008-purchased non-Unibody MBPro with the latest Snow Leopard OS updates as of Dec 29, 2009.
As soon as I did (no reboot necessary -- Macs rule!) I connected my drive and it asked me to Initialize it. I formatted it with MS-DOS successfully. Worked like a charm.
The entire process took maybe 15 minutes from the time UPS dropped off the package at my front door.
Customer Review: Does not work with unibody MacBook Pro and/or Leopard Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this after reading reviews here which said the card could be used with Macs. But after getting the drivers from IOgear, via Silicon Image, I got an immediate kernel panic when attempting to access a connected drive.
I subsequently learned that it's a common problem. Reading further on the Apple forums and elsewhere, I find there's much debate about where the problem lies...could be the driver, the chipset in the connected drives, Leopard, etc. But the bottom line is that this card does not work reliably (or at all) with new MacBook Pros and Leopard.
If you're a Mac user, you'll want to look elsewhere.
Customer Review: Do you feel lucky? Summary: 1 Stars
I got this card knowing it was a roll of the dice for Mac users. Sadly, I crapped out. Running 10.5.8 on a 15" MacBook Pro. All of the software installed correctly (from CD, 3132 non-raid folder, then via tech support, BASE drivers from Silicone Image site). However, as far as I can tell, the card is not working. No lights on the card, no drive on the desktop. Is it the card? Is the drivers? Is it the drive (WD MyBook Studio)? Who knows? Some people have had luck with it, others none. So before you buy, you gotta ask yourself, do you feel lucky? For me it was a waste of time.
Customer Review: Works great on MacBook Pro Summary: 5 Stars
A CD was included in the package, and it contained Mac drivers (although the Quickstart Guide did not mention Mac installation). The installation was easy and the card started working immediately.
For the record, I used the 3132 driver, non-RAID. My SATA drive was plugged in while the installation took place, and it mounted on the Desktop as the Install was happening.
This is just one data point, but this card works perfectly on my 2009 17" MacBook Pro running the latest OS.
Customer Review: Stopped working after a few days Summary: 1 Stars
The product worked fine for the first few days on my Macbook Pro, but unfortunately it has now died. I contacted customer support who promptly replied "Currently, we do not have Mac drivers but we suggest that you get the latest driver for the Sil 3132 - PCI Express from the Silicon Image website". The suggested driver does not help, so now I'm in the market for something a little more robust.
