Customer Review: Iogear SD Card Reader is not working on the new macbook?

I just got this SD card reader because my Macbook (new) does not have an SD card slot. Anyway, this product says it's completely compatible with both Macs and PCs. However, for some reason, whenever I try to transfer pictures or any data on my SD card to my computer, the thing stops working. It unmounts from my desktop and tells me that the disk has not been ejected properly. I tried disk utility repair, but it does the same thing when I try to repair it. Then my Mac tells me to reformat the disk - I have no idea what that even means, and whenever I try to access the disk or the information on it, it gets really temperamental and stops working. The price was right, and it came with a 1GB Scan Disk. What a deal. The device works great. It is small and convenient. Display light is a nice feature.
I had several special pictures stored on a disk that corrupted. The software I downloaded to recover my pictures did not recognize my camera connection on my PC. Troubleshooting suggested getting an external disk drive to resolve the problem. I bought the IOGEAR and the recovery software recognized it immediately (yea!), but was still unable to recover my lost pix from the corrupt disk. No fault of the IOGEAR driver. The IOGEAR works perfect with with a non-corrupt disk

I bought this so that a spare SD card could double as a "jump drive." It worked fine ... until the card was corrupted (might've been the PNY card, might've been this USB holder). A newer, Sandisk card works in it 98% of the time.
The card cover is very loose, and slides off on its own. IGNORE THE HOME-GROWN KEYCHAIN PICTURES. If you do this, you are sure to lose your $10 card reader and $60 memory card.
2009 Update: I've used this regularly for the intervening years, and it still works great. In fact, it sees most of its use as a Fedora Live bootable USB drive. Works great.

I, too, am in the minority of users who have huge problems with this device freezing up during transfer and/or not being recognized by the computer.
Given the disproportionate amount of glowing reviews, I'm left to wonder if this is due to some software configuration on my part (as well as that of other negative reviewers); but regardless, I wouldn't recommend taking the gamble. Before buying this product, I read the reviews, noticed that only 4 or 5 people gave negative reviews, and dismissed them as outliers. However, I'm wishing I hadn't; particularly since I bought three of them for friends/family.

The IOGEAR Universal Memory Drive Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader/Writer lets me make quick transfers of information to and from the SD memory cards that I use with my Kodak digital cameral and my Palm PDA. I can also use it like a thumb drive to transfer information between home and the office. Unlike regular thumb drives, I can switch out the card within, keeping my library of memory cards in circulation, and using them to greater advantage. I would find a dedicated thumb drive limiting. The IOGEAR Universal Memory Drive Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Memory Card Reader/Writer is handy, compact and versatile.
