Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of IOGEAR 5-Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI Card GIC251U

Customer Review: Vista may need special update for this card
Summary: 3 Stars

The packaging for the card does not say whether or not it is supported by Vista or by Windows 7. I installed the card on my Vista PC and the system produced a "USB device not recognized" error. My computer gets the automatic Vista updates and all of those were installed. However, there are "applications updates" that must be installed. One of those has to do with a certain USB chip on the motherboard. I installed the applications updates and the card was then recognized and worked. I gather that if you don't have that motherboard chip, you won't need the upgrade.

I had contacted iogear tech support by e-mail. They responded after a few days and told me to try the card in a different slot or in a different computer. They apparently did not know of the Vista patch. They said that the card is designed to work with 32-bit Vista. I wouldn't chance it with 64-bit Vista or with Win 7. That's something to keep in mind if you think you might eventually upgrade your OS.

The card has been working fine after the installation hurdle was passed.

Customer Review: Its a snap!
Summary: 5 Stars

I recieved my Iogear 5 port USB 2.0 PCI card within 2 days of purchasing it and within 15 minutes I had it installed and working. When I initially opened up my computer's case, I felt a bit intimidated. The thought of installing something internally left me dubious and overwhelmed. However, having prepared myself with an antistatic wrist strap, I felt good to go.

I took the silver slot cover off of the corresponding PCI slot, which was held in place by one philips head screw. Then I preceded to insert my USB 2.0 PCI card into an open PCI slot (which are normally white). The card snapped right in with ease, and when I booted my computer, windows XP recognized it right away and installed the proper drivers.

So if your dreading installing a USB 2.0 PCI card, don't worry..It's a snap!!!!

Side Note: This particular 5 port USB 2.0 card is a great product for the price. I highly recommend it!!

Customer Review: Once it's running, you'll love it.
Summary: 5 Stars

Once you get it connected, this is a great little card that will speed you through digital camera and MP3 player uploads. Mine didn't come with instructions so, I assumed correctly that you're supposed to install the software first, restart, and then shutdown. From there you can take apart the computer and install the card. My card however still did not work and I was about ready to Google away for an answer when I decided to e-mail the company instead. Someone from their tech response team quickly replied, "Try placing the card in different PCI slots on the motherboard in case there is an I/O conflict with one of your other devices." Not that I know or care what an I/O is in the first place, but I did as they recommended and voila it works like a charm.

Customer Review: Works as it should
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a simple USB 2.0 card, it worked effortlessly with my client's Dell Dimension 8200. Yes, this review conflicts with an earlier review which explicitly mentions that it does not work a Dell Dimension 8200. Nonetheless, it did for me.

I have installed many PCI cards, and this one was no different: quick and easy (though I must mention that the Dell computer PCI card installation process is a bit annoying).

Also, the "spotlight" reviews about compatibility issues with Windows XP and Service Pack 1 are out of date - Amazon should remove them. With SP2 as the standard, and Vista ready, there are no compatibility issues at all. This card is cheap, and it works. Recommended.

Customer Review: Great Card, Fast Delivery
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this card because my custom built PC is older and came out right before USB 2.0. I always lived with slow flash drive transfers but when I bought my iPhone the transfer time for syncing and movie transfers was way slow. The card installed instantly without a single problem on my Windows XP service pack 3 machine with Athlon CPU.
I have to run an extension cable from the back of my PC to the front to but I already owned that. I will look for a front panel USB plate for my Lian Li case if I can find one then see if I can connect using the internal USB port on the card. If not I can live with the hardware arrangement I have and I am loving the speed. No regrets with iogear or amazon.
