Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of IOGEAR 5-Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI Card GIC251UCustomer Review: Good quality product... Some difficulties with installation... Not sure whether those were issues with the product... Summary: 4 Stars
Please note that only four ports are external; the fifth one is internal, that is, it will reside inside the computer casing and will open toward the inside. The main thing I would like to report here is that I had a very positive experience with the customer support of IOGear. This PCI to USB 2 card bus was very easy to install in the computer, and Windows XP recognized it immediately, as it should, because the card is essentially a "Plug-and-play" device. Unfortunately, I could not use any USB devices with it, and my BIOS started reporting a duplicate "02/02/2 Error allocating Mem BAR for PCI device." This enumeration problem caused Windows to start very slowly. I called customer support, and the agent advised me to use my other PCI slot. This worked. However, it is puzzling that the card did not work from the other PCI slot, as it should have. Maybe this is a problem with the product, or maybe it is a peculiarity with my system's motherboard. In addition to this, I am still not convinced that all of the ports are working. The card has five ports, but one of them is internal. I am not convinced that the internal port is working properly, but I have tested the external ones and they seem to be OK. Obviously, this USB 2.0 card improved the USB-related performance of my system compared to the old USB 1.0 ports, which are still working.
Customer Review: Good deal, and I found no problem under MS Vista Summary: 5 Stars
Having a strong need for more USB 2.0 ports on my machine, I looked at several different options. I kept coming back to this PCI Card from Iogear. I have purchased a number of products from Iogear over the years, and have become confident in their products. I have yet to have any issue with Iogear's hardware, and this card is no exception. I am running Vista Ultimate on my computer, so I did spend some time researching to see if this product would be compatible... as most have found, in some cases just because it says it is "Vista ready" or "Vista Compatible", that may not turn out to be the case.
I've been running the card for about a month now, and not a single issue. Wireless network adapters, external drives, cameras, all ran fine without any issues. In fact, I was able to use an old external Imation floppy drive using the ports on this card, when previously using my computer's built-in USB 2.0 ports didn't seem to work.
Installation was very easy, and upon the initial boot-up after installing the card, Vista immediately recognized the device and loaded the appropriate driver as needed. Once at my desktop it was only a few seconds and the new USB 2.0 ports were ready to go! If you have an available PCI slot, and need more USB 2.0 ports, this card should do it for you!
Customer Review: Painless PC Upgrade Summary: 5 Stars
Got an older PC tower and cool gadgets that won't play nicely together? Then get this card!
The Iogear 5 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI Card is the smartest way to get an older PC (like my 2002 Dell Dimension 8200) updated so it can connect with todays peripherals and electronics. When connecting my digital camera or printer to my original 1.1 USB ports I was constantly prompted with an annoying popup prompt that read, "your device will operate faster with a highspeed USB port." I was able to ignore the messages until my son asked for an IPOD for Christmas. I wanted to be able to sync and charge the Ipod with my computer, which requires a 2.0 USB Port. The Iogear card was an inexpensive high quaility fix. All you need is a blank slot in your computer into which the Iogear card fits. My Dell recognized it upon startup and what do you know? No more pesky prompts. And better still, my printer begins immediately after I click, and my pictures download in seconds instead of minutes.
A word of caution, though. Be sure you have a tower. I considered one for my other PC (the horizontal Optiplex GX 150) and it won't fit.
Customer Review: 3rd Times' a charm Summary: 4 Stars
I have a 2003 Dell 350 Workstation.
I read several reviews, mostly the 1 stars, many of which had problems that were resolved and the product worked.
I installed the card. Booted the system. I recieved three Plug and Play errors. When it finished booting, my graphics card drivers failed to install. Because I had read the reviews I knew the majority of the problems were solved by selecting a different slot. I switched slots and re-started. I feared old age would set in before the system would finish booting, the cursor would barely move across the screen. I tried slot number three. The system booted fine. The typical "Found New Hardware" balloon popped up. I then checked the device manager and found that two of the three new USB controllers had an exclamation point over them. Even though I have WinXP SP3 which is "suppose" to have the proper drivers, I went to IOGear's site, downloaded the driver(s) they offer and it took care of the problem. I just finshed up so only time will tell.
The card does have only 4 ports but my 3 year old flat panel display has four. I plugged it in and now I have 7 2.0 connections.
Customer Review: Major driver installation problems with 98SE Summary: 1 Stars
Wasted hours trying unsuccessfully to install the driver for the IOGEAR GIC251U 5-port USB card on a Dell Optiplex GX-1 running 98SE. (This computer already has 2 USB 1.1 ports.) The main problem is that the Add Hardware Wizard does not find a *.inf file in the IOGEAR-supplied CD folder and does not recognize the executable program that is in the CD folder. User has to cancel out of the wizard and execute the driver installation file as a stand-alone program. This results in installation of drivers that show up in the Device Manager. However, the installation wizard comes up at every subsequent reboot and the user must cancel out of it just to get the computer going.
Installed card seemed to work OK for a D-Link wireless adapter, but did not recognize a digital camera that was satisfactorily recognized by one of the non-IOGEAR 1.1 ports. The following actions did not help. (1) swapping the card to another PCI slot, (2) downloading and installing more recent driver file from IOGEAR website, (3) three calls to customer support, where I found sympathy but so solution.
