Customer Review: Broken UV Filter = Saved Zoom Lens!

I recently purchased a new Canon zoom lens (55-250mm AF/IS). Since the lenses these days have plastic bodies (as well as plastic screw threads for filters and lens caps!), I wanted to protect it from damage by adding a nice metal ring UV filter. Well, while on a night shoot, I dropped the new lens. It was in a cloth bag, but I just knew it was toast. I was pissed and said a few choice words... picked it up, and sure enough, the UV filter was shattered, into a bunch of sharp triangular shards of glass. The lens landed on the edge of the UV filter. After some careful yet forceful twisting, I was able to get the filter off. Once I air canned the fine glass particles from the shattered UV filter off the surface of the zoom lens, I attached it to the camera. To my amazement, the auto focus and image stabilization worked just fine. NO DAMAGE to the lens surface... thanks to the UV filter. And... the plastic threads on the front of the lens were undamaged... thanks to the metal ring on the filter. So... all I can say is a little $20 filter saved my lens! Well worth the price for the added protection - especially for many of the lens offerings these days. Buy it - hopefully, this will never happen to you, but if it does - you'll be glad you had the filter in place!
