Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hoodman H-LPP3 HoodLoupe 3.0 Professional 3-Inch Screen Loupe

Customer Review: I can see, I can see!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you shoot outdoors with a DSLR (or any camera where you depend upon the display for visual feedback about your shot) once you start using a Hoodman Loupe you'll wish you'd gotten one WAY sooner. It's the great equalizer -- no matter how bright or dark the ambient light is, you can see your display exactly the same. Simply, it works. The German optics in it are perfect, and the Hood itself is light, yet feels sturdy, well made with a nice, thick, comfortable rubber coating on it. My only (minor) complaint is having a fist-sized thing hanging in front of my chest when I'm shooting on location or during an impromptu hike. It's not really that big a deal, and the peace of mind it brings by allowing you to actually see your display is MORE than worth the trade off. (optionally I can keep it on my belt or pack strap in its pouch...out of the way, yet handy.)

Get one and you'll have to shoot fewer CYA dupe shots because you'll know when you got it right.

Customer Review: Indispensable
Summary: 5 Stars

I hemmed and hawed before purchasing this - I thought, I can just cup my hand around the LCD, or move to a shady spot, I don't need to spend $80 on this thing. Besides, it probably won't work since I wear glasses. I was so wrong.

My sister and I were at a photography workshop a few months ago learning how to use off camera flash, at noon, and I used her Hoodman (she has every photography gadget there is) to check out my LCD and was hooked. The image is so clear, so easy to see, absolutely no eyestrain, and it worked perfectly with my glasses. You can adjust it by turning a dial near the eye piece, so it should work for everyone. Plus you can wear it around your neck, which makes it convenient and easy to access.

I use it all the time, now, since I am doing most of my photography in natural light. It is one of the most useful tools I own, next to my white balance grey card.

Highly, highly recommend.

Customer Review: Awesome piece to add to your kit! (but dont buy the straps!)
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased the hoodman to mount onto our T2i, since the LCD screen is nearly impossible to view while outside on a bright sunny day. Not only that but it also allows the camera user a better view and feel on where their settings are and where that should be.

We initially purchased the expensive hoodman straps to go along with our product but quickly realized that they werent worth diddly squat. They dont exactly give you a snug fit and its rather difficult to place/remove when you have other items on your camera (i.e. steady cam and/or zoom). We then purchased a hard LCD cover screen (Hard LCD Cover Screen Protector for Canon EOS 550D/ Rebel T2i/ Kiss x4) and simply glued on our hoodman to it. Almost a perfect fit and makes using your hoodman way convenient!

Customer Review: Pana-vue #3 Slide Viewer
Summary: 1 Stars

I had a Hoodman, but now use a Pana-vue #3 Slide Viewer instead. To make a LCD loupe; the slide viewer would need be modified with a saw to remove the slide holder part. I belong to a camera club in suburban Maryland Washington DC (NBCC), many of our members now use this as a camera loupe solution. The Pana-vue is smaller and more compact then the Hoodman; remember a LCD loupe will typically be kept handy by storing in a pocket when not in use. While "on a shoot", having a durable, compact, item in my pocket is preferable to a fragile, bulky, one.

Customer Review: Great idea, not executed with functionality
Summary: 3 Stars

When I first saw this item I thought it would be a necessity for any videographer who uses a DSLR to shoot video. While it does perform the task of being loupe for your DSLR, it's lacking in design and execution. If you were to try to run and gun with this setup with the added straps you would have a difficult time keeping the loupe centered over the LCD. The straps are very flimsy and can hold the loupe securely to the LCD screen. I will only use this if I don't have to worry about getting a certain shot once.

Another problem is this is the only loupe in this price range which might explain it's quality. The next step up is the Zacuto attachment and it cost $300, that just seems high.
