Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-HygrometerCustomer Review: Good unit, but some drawbacks Summary: 3 Stars
Length of ownership: almost 1 year
Pros: Easy to set up and use. Clear readout, even at a distance. Remote sensor successfully and consistently transmits around 25' through 3 walls. Updates readings frequently. Seems to be pretty accurate (if you put it in the right place). Durable and reliable, thus far.
Cons: Capable of having additional remote sensors added, yet they're difficult to find and just as expensive as buying a second base station and remote combo. Remote sensor is made of white plastic, yet quickly heats up in direct sunlight, leading to grossly inaccurate temperatures. Clicking through four channels just to get the outdoor temp is a little annoying. Of course, neither of the previous two problems (outdoor sensor heating and flipping through channels) would be as big a problem if additional remote sensors to place in different locations and fill up the unused channels were even available :P
Notes: I followed the instructions and used Lithium AA batteries for the outdoor sensor, since I intended to have it out all winter. I have yet to change them almost a year later (which I think is pretty good).
Customer Review: Right now it's 72 inside and 57 outside Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted an inside/outside thermometer. After reading numerous reviews I settled on this one in spite of several negative comments. When I set it up, I did not exactly follow the directions, but just put the batteries in. The main unit immediately picked up the outside unit which was probably about 30 feet from the main unit. The remote unit is on the front porch out of the Sun and wind. The main unit sits on my desk and is way from the wall.
It does just what I want. I want to know what the outside temperature is when I am ready to go out. Official weather readings can be somewhat different, so I prefer a local reading. Inside, it matches fairly closely to my central air thermostat (which is probably really inadequate) and outside closely to the Weather Channel reports.
About every five seconds it changes readings. The outside readings are marked by a wireless symbol and a channel number. I don't pay much attention to the minimum and maximum, so I can't comment as to what time period they refer to. Mainly, here in south Texas I don't have to worry about minimum temperatures below freezing.
Customer Review: Performs as advertised. Summary: 4 Stars
I had an old Indoor/Outdoor thermometer which broke after 20 years, and I replaced it with this. So far I am very pleased. I tested the temperature reading of the remote to the base unit, and then both of these to the wall thermostat controlling the Heat/AC. Also checked it with another "tube" indoor thermometer. The remote and the base unit agreed with each other and the tube thermometer while they were all within 1 degree of the wall thermostat. I did notice that when you hold the remote in your hand , the heat from your hand will make the remote go up. It will take several minutes for the base and remote to stabilize once you handle them. The base unit can handle up to 3 remotes, but the price of each additional remote is as much as the original package including the base unit...why is that? Haven't had it long enough to test the battery longevity. I have the remote in the garage right now, which is about 20 feet away, and the signal goes through a wall and a floor. It's functional. Would be better if the readout on the base was backlit when you pressed a button. But at least the numbers are large and easy to read.
Customer Review: So far, so good! Summary: 3 Stars
This review is for Honeywell wireless I/O thermometer/hygrometer TM005X. We've had our unit up and running for about a month now. Other than a loss of signal during the initial setup, it has been working flawlessly since. Our receiver and transmitter are seperated by one wall, and are approximately 40 feet apart.
I bought this unit because it is one of the few wireless models that have a low-ish temperature range (-38F). We live in Northern Minnesota so it is not uncommon to have a few days each winter that are colder than that (-50F<>).
Likes:
Large, attractive and easy to ready display.
The option to monitor multiple transmitters.
Dislikes:
Transmitter range only goes down to -38F.
Receiver does not display indoor and outdoor temperatures at the same time. You have to either toggle through the channels manually, or set the unit to auto-cycle from one channel to the next. It would be nice to have the option to display the indoor and one remote channel temperatures one the same screen, with the humidity readings made either smaller or on different screens.
Customer Review: Works well Summary: 5 Stars
I bought one of these units because I needed to monitor the temperature inside my refrigerator. I wanted to know if it was too warm for my food, too cold for my insulin, or right on the money.....it was both. The thermometer indicated that it was sometimes too cold and sometimes too warm, so I got another compact refrigerator for my insulin, and set the main refrigerator to be cold.
I tried using a conventional thermometer to check the temperature inside my refrigerator, but by the time I was able to read what it said, it had warmed up a degree or two, so I decided to look for a thermometer that had a transmitter that I could place inside the refrigerator, and monitor the temperature inside the refrigerator without having to open it. This unit was perfect.
One thing they don't mention is that the main unit that sits inside your house is also a thermometer. You can see what the temperature is where ever you set the base unit, plus you can have up to three other units that you can use to monitor the temperature in other areas. For $25, this is well worth the money. I'd highly recommend it.
