Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Honeywell TM005X Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Thermo-HygrometerCustomer Review: Don't Waste Your Money Summary: 2 Stars
I like waking in the morning and knowing how cold or warm it is outdoors. This wireless device seemed to fit my needs nicely, with a few added frills to go. For instance, it tells you if it is wet outside even though you can just look and see for yourself. It also supports up to three remote sensors that can automatically display on rotation, 1-2-3-indoors, if you want that. I imagine if you had a wine cellar or something similar, that would be nice.
I don't.
It's a pretty clever device, but not always on or reliable. The main problem I have with this unit is that, for the money spent it should work all of the time. I have followed the instructions about placement of the remote sensor (less then 100 feet away and no huge obstructions). I placed mine less then 20 feet away, with a brick exterior. It works fine, when it works. Seems like any temperature change kills the signal, or possibly interrupts the electric flow from the batteries. Oh yeah, Honeywell suggests using lithium ion batteries so the sensor will perform well in very cold conditions....feh!
If all you want is a thermometer to know the temperature outdoors, don't waste your money on this product. It has been unreliable for me. As I write, it is 70.7 deg. F indoors and "who even knows" deg. F outdoors as the unit has stopped working again, prompting this review!
Whoa...wait, it just came back on! 50.2 deg. F....junk.
Customer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
As an engineer, I am particular about accuracy. Some others have complained about differences between the temperatures and humidity reported by the base and remote when left adjacent to each other. I recognize that the base and remote can have different response time and under varying conditions could be expected to report different numbers even when next to each other. So I decided to perform an informal test. I placed the base and remote in a large picnic cooler with a gallon jug of water (for its thermal mass) and waited about 24 hours for everything to come to equilibrium. The temperatures were then identical between the base and remote and the humidity readings were an indicated 5% different. To take the readings I had to open the cooler. A better test would be done by cutting a window in the cooler and taking readings over time without disturbing the sealed environment surrounding the base and remote.
The temperature readings were accurate to about 0.5 degrees of a bulb thermometer that I trust to be accurate. The humidity readings made sense and a difference of only an indicated 5% I think is very good for an inexpensive instrument.
I like that the display can be set to alternate between the base and remote readings. I like the large numerals. I am able to leave the remote out on a screen porch and read the data upstairs. For home use, I don't think this product could get any better.

Primary review for TE653ELW
Secondary comments and review for TM005X
SUMMARY (TE653ELW):
Altitude is capped at 3990 feet.
If you live at a higher altitude, some of the features will not work correctly !!
IMPORTANT NOTE (TE653ELW):
As everyone else says the documentations is horrible, however if you google "TE653ELW" you will find passable documentation.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE (TE653ELW):
IMMEDIATELY after inserting the batteries, you need to set the altitude. If you do anything else, you can not get back to this function.
REVIEW:
I returned the TE653ELW and purchased a TM005X. Before sending back the TE653ELW , I put both base stations and the remotes next to each other and got the following readings: TE653ELW 77.7º 21%, TM005X 79.9º 23%, Remote 79.3º 16%, Remote 80.0º 15%
You can see there is over a 2º variance in the temperature reading and a 6% variance in humidity.
If you do not live at altitude, don't care about a degree or two in accuracy, and do not mind horrible documentation, this product is a reasonable purchase. Having done some reattach, I think this product is above average for the price point.
EPILOGUE:
Living at 6,000 feet, I returned the TE653ELW and kept the TM005X as a cheap placeholder until I decide to splurge on a more expensive product.
Customer Review: Honeywell Brand Model TM005X Humidity-Temperature Gauge Summary: 4 Stars
I make cheese as a hobby and bought this unit from Amazon to measure temp and humidity in my fridge and in future cheese aging cave, (recipes, results and pictures in forum[...]
Received this small gauge and remote sensor in standard huge plastic bubble package and even bigger Amazon cardboard box (ie ratio of about 1000:1 of box to actual unit). Needed sharp knife to open package, own 4 AA batteries and very small (not jewellers size) either slot or philips + screwdriver to install them in remote. As per directions, loaded batteries in remote first then base station. Observations:
1) The remote unit is larger than expected at roughly 1" x 2" x 4", is not sun - rain weatherproof, and has it's own very small LCD readout screen.
2) The base station is also a standalone humidity and temp gauge on Channel IN for indoors.
3) Both units have back switches for celsius or fahrenheit.
4) Initially with units placed side by side, my base read 4 F and 1% humidity higher than remote. Lovely, but after 5 minutes the base station had "corrected" itself to very similar temperature as remote unit.
5) Remote unit broadcasts it's readings with red LED flash to master unit about every 45 seconds.
6) Instructions in French, English, Spanish to please all three North American Countries!
7) Works as expected.
Customer Review: Quit working Summary: 1 Stars
This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my parents. We followed the instructions setting up the outdoor transmitter and it worked fine for a few weeks. Then the indoor unit began displaying dashes periodically for the outdoor temperature. Eventually it simply would not read the outdoor temperature and it now constantly displays dashes.
We've tried new batteries and all combinations of resetting the units, but it simply will not work. It will read the transmitted temperature when the two devices are right next to eachother, but as soon as you move the transmitter even a foot away it quits reading it. Obviously this is not acceptable for trying to pick up an outdoor temperature.
Because of this, I cannot recommend this item. Also back when I bought it, it was only about half what it costs now. It's definitely not worth the cost now when it is evidently susceptable to failing.
We no longer have any of the packing, so it's probably not worth the effort of returning. I have contacted Honeywell to see if they are aware of any regular malfuctions with this device. If anyone had a similar experience with this and figured out a resolution, please let me know your suggestions. Thanks.
