Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hawking HWU8DD Hi-Gain USB Wireless-G Dish AdapterCustomer Review: hawking's wifi antennae Summary: 4 Stars
This antennae pulls in wi-fi from about a mile away... was fairly easy to install but make sure you read the instructions first. Hawkings has a website for downloading a driver and the antennae comes with a disk. I've used my Hawkings for 14 months dropped it a few times and it still works. This should be easy enough for anyone to set up. I've since started to use another type just to try it out and the set up instructions were written in Korean and I had to get a computor geek to set it up and usually the arrogance is enough to turn your stomach so better stick with the Hawkings.
Customer Review: Solid signal and works great with Linux Summary: 4 Stars
The built in wifi in my Toshiba laptop (realtek RTL8187B) does not work well with Linux. This antenna (Zydas chip) works right out of the box with Ubuntu 9.04 and never drops the signal! Even under windows I was dropping public signals frequently. I wrapped some shipping tape around the base and the antenna so that the top dish does not pull out of the the base when I travel. It 's not pretty but that it does not effect the performance. It's necessary since the the dish comes from the base easily and is attached by a fragile wire to the base.
I highly recommend it to people running Linux who are having trouble with their built in wifi cards.
Customer Review: Decent value, decent price Summary: 3 Stars
The product works pretty well. My biggest complaint is how poorly it is built. It seems too light and too easily broken. We have had it for two months. My other complaint is the disk that comes with it did not work. Neither did anything from the website. It works now, but with the drivers only. No software that shows signal strength, etc.
I still think its a good deal for the money, just ask that it be slightly better made and come with or at least offer on the website something that works software wise! Ugh! I nearly had a nervous breakdown trying to install it. With just a few improvements I would call it an A+ product for the money!
Customer Review: Excellent WiFi extender equipment Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased 2 of these units for a client in an *old* church. We needed to provide Internet and LAN access to the assistant rector's office and to the choir room without wires. The software installed in less than 1 minute. The unit in the office made the connection flawlessly. The choir room was the location tha worried me the most. It is below ground and below the window to the copier room where the WAP is located. In fact, when I first fired it up, things did look good - no signal, no link. But after about 30 seconds, it found the ActionTec WAP and nor runs 40%+ signal strength and 80%+ link quality. Surprised the heck out of me!
Customer Review: Good, inexpensive, easy to install Summary: 4 Stars
This device works exactly as described. It is very simple to install and does not require knowledge of how networks work. I'm using it with Vista and have had no compatibility problems. I use it to pick up the wireless connection at the other end of the house, going through multiple walls. It improves my signal from "fair" to "good" at almost all times that I'm online, making the online experience much, much better. Some reviewers expressed concern about its sturdiness, but that has not been an issue for me since I never need to move it. I'm very pleased with this purchase - its reasonable price was an added bonus.
