Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hawking HWDN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Network USB Dish Adapter

Customer Review: Not quite the power I thought I was getting but works.
Summary: 4 Stars

Well, I bought the HWDN1 because of it being supported in Ubuntu and it works there no problems.......but just for testing purposes to see if it was as good as what I read from some of these comments. I hooked it up to my laptop which has internal wireless and sorry to say my Atheros AR9281 with XSPAN puts this satellite to shame. At least two bars more reception with internal wireless. So it is known I was hooking to a wireless 'n' Linksys with MIMO so neither adapter should of had an advantage over the other. One more bit of thought though the Hawkins did get better reception than the Linksys USB 'n' adapter that is listed on the router's box as "for best performance use:", so it does fine job but Atheros has got something special with their new XSPAN AR9281 chipset. Compared all on 64bit-Vista Home Premium.

Customer Review: Did not install properly on my Mac or Windows 7
Summary: 2 Stars

I tried installing this on my Mac 10.4.11 and Windows 7 computers. The dish itself installed and detected networks, but I could not get my Mac to connect with those signals. Hawking customer support was NO help. I had similar issues with my Windows 7 computer. I have some knowledge of computers, and followed the directions on this. Customer support could not solve this issue and could not issue a Return Merchandise Authorization because I did not own the product for 30 days. If I waited that long, I wouldn't be able to return it to Amazon. Sent it back to Amazon, hope I get a decent refund. Don't have the time or inclination to sell it or continue to try and figure out how to get it to work.

Bummed it didn't work!

Customer Review: A waste of good money and time!
Summary: 1 Stars

This product is a waste of both your time and money. I spent 8 to 10 hours of this product and it never worked as stated. They talked about getting up to 600 percent better reception, etc. No way this unit even helped me at all. The wireless card in my laptop did a much better job then this unit. If you want to waste a great deal of time, try working with thier tech support department. The first guy didn't even have an idea of what to do. Everyone I talked to there, is from India and they didn't seem to have a clue about what to do about this product. After hours of trying to gain any improvement, I gave up on this product and requested a refund.
It's junk as far as I know and no one there seemed to disagree.

Customer Review: Better than most
Summary: 3 Stars

This adapter is better than most over-hyped high-range antennas but it still is a must to have it placed outside for it to be 100% effective. I could not get a good signal indoors, it was even weak through a window. I have since purchased an Alfa 1W 9db gain omni-directional antenna and adapter kit and had better results. The outside of the box makes it seem like there are two setup discs, one for mac, and one for windows, but there is only one disc with the software for both. The dish was very small and seemed cheaply made. If this bad boy was waterproof it would be great but since it is not it is useless for my application. My access point was about a half mile away with minor obstructions such as flags and power poles.

Customer Review: Blew Me Away!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hesitated to buy this based on several iffy reviews. My expectations being tempered I rolled the dice and clicked buy. In short, it more than tripled my signal strength (20% ---> 70%) and took roughly two minutes to have up and running. This thing made my day!
Also:
I don't like to install from CD without checking the manufacturers site for updates. Finding the drivers and software was painless. I mention this because there's nothing I hate more than losing a CD and having to care.

In addition, I left the internal wireless G modem running on my notebook to see if this would cause conflicts.
No problems of any sort as of this writing.
