Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Haier HLT71 7-Inch Handheld LCD TV

Customer Review: Great little TV
Summary: 4 Stars

I use this in the Kitchen. No need for details as most everyone already provided it. The antenna reception will only be as good as the antenna and your location as anyone with some sense would recognize. In any event, the over the air works out pretty well while I am 40 miles from Downtown Los Angeles (testing). I actually permanently connected it to a cable TV line. I only have a few small gripe about this unit.

1. It doesn't have a standby-power ON/OFF button on the unit itself that mirrors the red button on the remote. It only has a hard power ON/OFF on the TV unit itself. So if you can't find your remote or its not conveniently available, you will need to hard power off the unit and power it back ON to watch TV.

2. The battery uses a special rechargeable battery which is nice. They should have made it so you can also use AA or AAA battery as alternatives. That would be more practical for traveling and emergencies. Though I only use this in the Kitchen, it doesn't bother me much.

3. The Remote either has short range and/or limited angles. It seems like you have to be almost straight on to work the remote with the TV.

Other than the above three, I think its a great TV. I mean, its only a 7" screen TV....

Customer Review: Disappointed in the quality and performance
Summary: 2 Stars

The good:

- External antenna jack
- Built in QAM tuner for unencrypted digital cable in addition to an ATSC tuner for over the air broadcasts
- Digital tuner sensitivity is on par with other tuners I've tested including PCI TV cards, USB PC TV sticks (Hauppauge HVR-950Q, Pinnacle PCTV 800e), and my Sony LCD and Samsung DLP TVs.
- Comes with a car adapter
- Has an AV in for use with game consoles, DVD players or whatever else
- Supports DTV EPG (over the air only)
- Remote is actually pretty decent

The bad:

- LCD has poor contrast and color (to be fair, this is expected for an LCD TV in this price range)
- Included antenna is clumsy to rotate
- No signal meter
- No automatic detection of aspect ratio, which means that all 4:3 signals stretch to fill the screen and you have to manually set the aspect ratio to fix it.

That said, when I first turned it on, the LCD had a white line at the bottom left. I'm thinking maybe that the layers of the LCD and backlight weren't aligned at the factory properly. I decided to send it back to Amazon since it clearly is defective. As a result I can't comment about the battery life, since I didn't really use it for long.

Customer Review: This TV not recommended for emergency use.

Haier HLT71 7-Inch Portable LCD TV
There are already many reviews of this little TV so I will focus on just one point - its reception. We bought this TV to replace an analog, battery powered TV for use in emergencies and for its portability for moving room to room. However, with its included antenna, which must be relied on during power outages, the reception is unacceptable. We live just outside a large city in the area where all the broadcast TV towers are located. In fact, we can see three of them from our house and all the major network towers are within 3 miles. With our analog portable we never even had to extend the antenna and on our household TVs we use a straightened paper clip for UHF. Digital converter boxes work with the included monopole antenna on the TV the box is attached to. However, the Haier will not even recognize the digital NBC channel and breaks up on the digital ABC channel. PBS is broadcasting on analog and four digital subchannels - the Haier doesn't even know they're there! Fortunately we were able to return the unit to Amazon for a refund.
So, if you're looking for a reliable battery operated TV to keep you informed during those tornado warnings, hurricanes, or blizzards I would NOT recommend the Haier.

Customer Review: Pretty darn-good little TV
Summary: 4 Stars

Unless I visit my Canadian relatives (before 2011) my former analog hand-held b&w TV isn't much good anymore...and I must say that this 7" Haier portable is a welcome replacement.

What I like is the clear picture, the general ease of use, the capabilities of adjusting picture and other settings to very personal levels, and it has pretty good sound too.

What I'm not too crazy about, is that the whip antenna supplied with the unit is next to useless. The "antenna-farm" for this area is about 10 miles from my house. The "whipper" just won't capture much of a useable signal on most channels, so I've been forced to purchase separate antennas. (see my other reviews) Also, the unit's tuner, while receiving both analog & digital broadcasts...seems to lack a bit of sensitivity, whereby I've had to go to a stronger antenna, than what I was using on a 13" 1980-something Radio Shack TV (with converter) to get the same channels on the Haier.

I guess the battery is ok. 2 hrs runtime? -- 6 hrs to charge. And by the way, the battery charge light go ON, EVERYtime the AC adapter is plugged in! I just hope if left plugged-in (with full charge--showing a green light) that it doesn't OVERcharge.

Overall I'm satisfied.

Customer Review: Good product, but no service available from Mfgr
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchase this Haier 7" Digital LCD TV from Amazon in Jan '09. It hasn't gotten much use, but we did use it every now and then. Just this month, I went to use it, and noticed a horizontal blank/black line running across the screen. It's probably 1/8" thick and located about one quarter down from the top of the screen. I called Haier to get a service center location, as stated in the owner's manual. They gave me a number to a local company, but couldn't provide an address. I called the number and it has been disconnected. I looked up the business name on our state's official business directory, only to find the company status is inactive. Figures. So, I again called Haier to get another number, then they said that's the only one they had. They then told me to look up any TV repair company in my area for help, and that as long as they could provide a repair invoice, they would still cover the parts. I'm not overly thrilled with this, but I guess that's what I have to do. I only have a few weeks before the warranty runs out, so I hope I can find someone. Of the 2 I've already called, neither have even heard of this brand name. Red flag, right there. But, what can I expect for an inexpensive (by some measurements) electronic device.
