Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Haier HLT71 7-Inch Handheld LCD TV

Customer Review: Haier 7" digital TV not worth buying
Summary: 1 Stars

Received my 7" Haier in late May. Set it up immediately and was disappointed with the number of local stations it was able to pull in.

Knowing that digital can be more difficult to receive, I recently purchased a good set of rabbit ears and proceeded to reprogram it. It did better but still not worthwhile.

I then set-up two separate TV's with the same rabbit ears. One TV was already digital (a 19" Sharp with built in digital tuner), the 2nd TV was an old analog (12" Sony). We have a converter box for the Sony and use it in our bathroom where we can not easily run our cable system. Both TV's worked well and pulled in every local station including several that the Haier could not.

I am returning the Haier and will stick with one of the other two TV's in event of power failure (we live in an area of Florida that has frequent power outages). I will power the other TV's with a 110V battery back up system we have for emergency.

Some day, when one of the good manufacturers make a decent battery powered digital TV, I will gladly buy it. We had two (2) battery powered analog ones we just stopped using when the analog stations went off the air (a Sony and a Panasonic). Hope these companies jump into the small battery powered digital TV business soon.

Customer Review: Useless electronic junk
Summary: 1 Stars

I had been wanting to get one of these portable 7" LCD TV's for a long time. I was waiting for the price to drop, so when I saw one on sale in May (2010) for a really low price, I jumped at the offer. Turned out to be a HUGE mistake. Unfortunately, I bought it from a place (not Amazon) that does not allow returns on open merchandise. Otherwise, I would have returned it immediately even if hit with a restocking charge. So it now occupies space in a drawer, a useless piece of electronic junk.

I was really looking forward to having a small, portable battery-operated TV to take around. I live 15 miles direct from downtown Chicago. That's where all the big transmitters for the major network stations are located so I figured reception would not be a problem. Wrong. According to the website listings, I should be able to receive 20-25 broadcast channels. After the scan finished, this thing could only pick-up about FOUR channels! That was OUTSIDE with the antenna fully extended and pointing toward downtown. Only one was a major network and one was Spanish language which must have been closer. One of the recognized channels pixelated so bad it was unwatchable.

Clearly, the tuner in this thing is hopelessly weak. Totally useless.

Customer Review: Little TV/Monitor a good value
Summary: 5 Stars

We work in video production and have bought several of these. We've found it to be an excellent value for the price. We use it primarily as a video monitor, sending composite video and stereo audio in through the RCA jacks on the side. So far, this has proven to be a reliable, compact, and easy-to-use monitor. The mini-headphone jack serves just fine, and the picture is bright, fully color-saturated, and reasonably crisp. A bit pesky to have to use the remote to switch the image between "normal" and wide-screen, which it doesn't seem to sense automatically. And, of course, the small speakers are a bit crispy-sounding, but not bad for their limited size. Haven't used the built-in battery much, so I can't rate its life yet.
As a television, this model seems to pull in the local channels just fine with the included antenna. There are occasional dropouts, but I think that's more a function of the digital TV signal. I'm still surprised to get the digital tuner plus the actual television/monitor for not that much more than the digital tuners by themselves. Controls are simple enough that I bought one for my dear mother to use, and she's not exactly eager to deal with complicated devices.
Again, so far, we're very satisfied and will probably buy a couple more of these.

Customer Review: Great Little TV
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using the Haier HLT71 TV now for about 3 weeks and am very pleased with it. I needed a small TV for my home office desktop and this works perfectly. Understand that I have not used it as a portable (it's hooked up to my cable service), and probably won't, so I have no comments regarding the antenna, battery, or portable operation.

Construction quality is excellent. I like the rugged black case. It feels like hard rubber that would survive a real beating. The screen is very bright and is non-glare. Colors are vivid and picture is sharp.

Sound is about what you would expect on a very small TV -- not full range, a little tinny, and no options for adjusting treble and bass.

The remote control device works very well and does everything you would expect it to do. Don't expect much help from the brief user's manual but everything is easy to figure out.

It has a very workable fold-out stand and also a standard tripod mount on the bottom. That's never mentioned in the specs but it could come in handy if I wanted to mount it a little higher on a small camera tripod.

In summary, I rate it a "5" because I can't find anything of substance to complain about. It's a great little TV and well worth the money spent.

Customer Review: Mine must be a reject
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought one of these so that I could still watch tv when camping as my old analog portable became obsolete. But I have not been able to find an antenna that allows me to pick up signals anywhere with any success. However that isn't the televisions fault.

When I hook it to cable it picks up plenty of signals including digital channels my analog tv can't get. BUT the pixellation is horrible on anything moving quickly. There is usually a long smear of color following the movement. When it isn't pixelating then the picture is quite good, unfortunately that isn't often enough.

There is also often momentary loss of signal even hooked to cable. Not sure why, anything else hooked to my cable is fine. The sound occasionally drops out and often has a sort of vibration echo to voices (anybody remember 'max headroom'? sounds a bit like that).

And speaking of sound, on my set the mute and volume buttons do not work on the tv or the remote. The only way to adjust the volume is to push a button on the remote marked 'mts' and then very quickly use the left or right arrow keys to move the volume up or down.

So basically all mine is used for is watching the news during a power outage as long as the cable is still working.
