Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Haier HLT71 7-Inch Handheld LCD TVCustomer Review: Simple and inexpensive Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered two of these TVs to use in my wife's car for the kids to watch. I mounted two large velcro straps on back of both of them so they could be mounted to the back of the headrests. I am using an Ipod as the video source which we have several kids movies loaded. This is where the AV jacks work wonderfully. I am not using these as a TV tuner so I cannot rate the TV reception. This system works so much better than a DVD player since we do not have to have several DVDs in the car.
This worked so well that I ordered two more for my vehicle. Unfortuneltly, both TVs were defective upon arrival. Haier was unable to resolve this issue and concluded that they would need to be returned. I got online with Amazon and filled out a return/exchange form and printed out a return label. The NEXT day, two more new TVs were delivered and I gave the UPS driver the two defective ones. I am happy to say that the two new ones work great. I can only hope that they continue to work.
I am COMPLETELY satisfied with Amazon's return policy. I am still shocked that the new ones were shipped one day delivery and I did not have to wait for Amazon to receive the defective ones first. This is why I shop exclusively at Amazon.
I recommend this TV especially if your intentions are to pipe in a video signal. Now we are ready for the next road trip.
Customer Review: Much Better than Expected Summary: 5 Stars
I was amazed with this product. First of all, let me say that there are about 20 over-the-air Digital TV channels availabe in the central Oklahoma area. This being said, I followed the instructions to power the unit using the AC Adapter. I then scanned for channels and in just a few minutes I was channel hopping and thoroughly enjoying the fine quality picture displayed on the screen. I was actually hearing the programming in stereo too. I found that attaching the ear buds from my IPod gave me an even better viewing experience. The remote control is outstanding. I feel that I definately got my money's worth with this TV. This thing is great.
My only criticism is with the gigantic AC adapter and the fact that I cannot locate replacement batteries/external charger anywhere.
1.) I have purchased a travel case for the TV and it holds everything except the humongous AC power supply. This should be a more compact unit with a folding plug to take up less space when not in use.
2.)I would like to find and buy a couple extra batteries to have them on hand for storm season and some way to charge them separately from the TV. This would give me the opportunity to make it through an evening of tracking storms without having to leave my tornado shelter to find a car to plug into (assuming the local power grid is down due to the storms).
Customer Review: Bogus antenna somewhat weak tuner and battery, STILL... Summary: 4 Stars
I picked one of these up hoping it would pull in the over the air digital channels for my wife to watch in the kitchen. Our other TV picks up the VERY FEW(2-4) channels we have perfectly with an old UHF antenna from an ancient portable B/W set. This one had no such luck, the included antenna (a single rabbit ear) and the aforementioned UHF antenna from my other set failed to bring in a single channel on the 7" Haier. When I hooked it up to the outdoor antenna everything came in perfectly however,(non digital channels included) The included battery after a full charge(3 or 4 hours) started to flash red(low batt) after maybe 40 mins of viewing, with the sound, brightness, contrast set to fairly low levels. I expected more from the tuner and the included rechargable battery, but the unit does have a nice 480i image and a decent set of speakers on it. The TV does have most of the settings you would find on a larger LCD (picture settings, sleep, WS zoom, etc..)but the remote is really lacking an instant button for CLOSED CAPTIONS which this set displays admirably. The RCA inputs make this valuable as an optional monitor for displaying JPEG SLIDESHOWS, playing older game systems, or using as a portable monitor for digital filmmaking or picture taking. Pretty cool little TV just don't expect too much out of the battery or tuner.
Customer Review: Terrific little TV! Summary: 5 Stars
Haier HLT71 7-Inch Handheld LCD TV In a couple of months I'll be moving into a shared apartment, and I wanted a small TV to use in my room. After reading numerous reviews, I decided to order the Haier. This little TV exceeded all my expectations from the moment I took it out of the box. I found the instructions for scanning to be simple, and in less than 5 minutes I was able to view 26 perfectly-clear channels with the included antenna! (Of course, I live in the Washington, DC area, and there is excellent reception from numerous broadcasters). I couldn't be more pleased. I will note two very minor "cons:" First of all, the sound quality is not in any way comparable to that of a larger TV. But, what do you expect from a small TV? Then, second, the antenna takes a bit of adjustment to keep it upright. However, I was able to tighten it using only my hand (no tools required), and, I extended it very carefully before tuning. The antenna didn't need to be extended all the way, and I'm able to leave it in just one position. So, for all the reviewers who claim that this TV doesn't work, I think that it's because you don't have good reception in your area. Perhaps a better antenna would help you pull in the distant stations.
Customer Review: Good TV, bad reception Summary: 3 Stars
The good: The TV has a nice picture, good graphics, an intuitive menu, and a well designed remote -- very nice for such a little TV! It's lightweight and good looking. When the TV is plugged in to the cable tv system, it gets plenty of channels and the picture looks great. It's only 720 resolution, and the aspect ratio mode is "wide" or "normal" only, but it has lots of built-in personal picture and sound adjustments that are a nice feature.
The bad: Horrible over-the-air reception. With the single rabbit ear that comes with it, I couldn't get a single station in my area. I decided to purchase a separate antenna hoping that would help, and now I get TWO stations, both of which come in horribly. I doubt that's so much a problem with the TV but with the new broadcast technology, and highly dependent on how many over-the-air stations you get in your particular area. Back in the old days of analog TV, you could adjust the rabbit ears to get in stations even if they came in fuzzy. With the new digital TV technology, I haven't found that I'm able to do that. Stations pixellate, sound stutters -- it's unwatchable if it doesn't come in clearly.
That being the case with so many reviews on Amazon for this and similar portable TVs, I should think they should be designed with stronger antennas built-in.
