Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Haier HLT71 7-Inch Handheld LCD TV

Customer Review: Good for a bathroom
Summary: 4 Stars

This TV is not fancy. My father-in-law, who could afford any TV he wanted, was given this cheap quality TV for Christmas. Upon finishing watching the kids open their gifts, he spent the next two hours playing with his TV. He installed it in his bathroom using a coaxial cable to provide cable TV. He has since told us that it works very well for his purposes. He gets a good, not great (it is not HD so we knew that before ordering), picture and good sound. He only wanted to be able to watch the news while he prepared for work in the morning. As a community college president, it is important that he gets the news each morning and this TV allows him to multitask while dressing.

For those who want a great picture and amazing sound, you should know that a $130 TV will not deliver. Please, do not purchase then complain about the picture or sound quality. Reviews like that would have dissuaded me from buying this as a gift for my somewhat picky father-in-law. I am glad I did as this seems to be the best gift we have gotten him since I met him 11 years ago.

Oh yeah, this TV is SUPER lightweight. I shopped around at various stores (like Target) and found that the others seemed to have more weight. The casing of the set is not cheaply constructed to lower its weight. The casing is actually a part of the TV that my father-in-law likes the best.

Buy it! But make sure you are doing it for convenience in use not for high quality entertainment presentation.

Customer Review: Love this little TV. Better than expected.
Summary: 5 Stars

First off I am not an expert in electronics, but I do know when something works and I like it. I ordered this little TV to put next to my computer to watch some programs and the news. I was a bit leary at first so I did some research about the company. Last year they had profits of over $17 billion and employed over 500,000 people world wide. They have limited partnerships with Phillips and Toshiba. I thought that sounded pretty sound to me.

The TV arrived in great shape, packaged very nicely and secure. I opened the inner box, removed the contents and tried to read the manual. I say tried as the print is very small and the instructions are limited. I found the on screen menu much more helpful. I see here a lot of folks having problems with their antenna, fortunately on my previous computer I had a TV tuner card connected to my main Digital Cable box. I simply screwed the cable into the TV, set it up through menu and let the TV do the rest. It found over 100 stations including the local stations. I was really impressed. The picture seemed a little fuzzy though. It was like looking through glasses not prescribed for you. Then I noticed a bubble on the screen and noticed a clear plastic sheet covering the screen. Once I removed that the picture was beautiful. It has many features. I use the zoom to fill up the screen, made no changes at all to the color or any other changes. It's a joy to have sitting on my desk.

Customer Review: defective product - but once replaced, works fine!
Summary: 4 Stars

{Edit: Amazon sent a replacement that works very much better; the first one was defective.} Now I like it a lot more... and Amazon's customer service too! }

Unlike glowing praise by others, my review is very limited. The screen image is literally awful to look at and is much too blue. I assume there must be a defect because the colors are so bad, even with a high quality DVD player's cable connected. There is no black in the image, and all the other colors are somewhat wrong. I'll report back when Amazon replaces it with a properly functional model because you others have had rather good things to say about the Haier. It otherwise feels like a nice portable TV, but it will have to work like one first.

Update (before replacement):
Image is still too blue without black, but remarkably this Haier TV works in a moving car with just the included 3' whip antenna in a desolate area 40 miles from the nearest TV station! Even with windows closed, the signal from a marginal station was constant for several miles that I tried it. I suspect in urban areas this would be even better. Backseat viewing for the children, with headphones, might take their minds off of being bored.

What sucks is that it won't store available stations once turned off, and it must be rescanned each time.

Customer Review: Great TV With Proper Antenna!!
Summary: 4 Stars

Haier HLT71 7-Inch Portable LCD TV
I've had this for about 1 month and am very pleased with it. It seems that most reviewers are dissatisfied with the antenna/reception. Since the transition to digital transmission, it is my understanding that the signals are sent using UHF. I believe that the supplied antenna is a VHF type, which causes so many people to have problems. Remember the "old" UHF loop antennas that used to come with televisions? (Approx. 10" round metal about the size of coat hanger wire) This is all one needs now to receive the digital signals. I use an 18" coax cable, a 75-300 ohm converter, and a UHF loop antenna with my Haier 7" tv with excellent results. Online, you can purchase these items for easily under $5. The tv also works great when plugged into a wall jack for a rooftop antenna. (Combination UHF/VHF that is 30 years old!) The UHF loop antenna setup works equally as well outside as it does inside.
I also use the same setup with a 22" wall-mounted flat LCD screen in my house. The only thing different is that I used a longer cable so I could extend the loop antenna up near the ceiling so that the signal wouldn't get blocked by people moving about the house.
Realizing that any problems have been with the antenna and not the tv itself, I would highly recommend this tv!

Customer Review: Great price
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased the portable LCD TV about one month ago to replace an analog RCA pocket tv. Prior to making my purchase I read several other reviews of the Haier at amazon.com which were very helpful. For instance I did have to purchase the RCA digital antenna which one reviewer recommended. The digital antenna was necessary because I live approximately 30 miles from the Houston area and the antenna which was supplied with the Haier was not strong enough to pick up the digital signal. Even before digital television we had never been able to obtain a good signal on the local Houston stations. I did use the website antennaweb.org which gave some good information.
The picture is very good and with the digital antenna we can now see all of the local stations much better than with analog. The only problem with the antenna is that you do have to adjust it correctly to get the signal. After playing with it you learn which way it needs to be adjusted for the various stations you want to see. Some of the adjustment might possibly because we use the tv in the downstairs part of our house.
Overall, we are very happy with the tv and it serves its purpose. The price for the Haier was excellent as well since I did not want to spend a lot of money to replace the analog pocket tv.
I would definitely recommend this tv to other buyers and encourage anyone to read the reviews which to me were invaluable.
