Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Hauppauge 1120CN WinTV-HVR-950 Hybrid Video Recorder

Customer Review: Quick and Easy DVR for OTA signals
Summary: 5 Stars

I was looking for a quick and dirty way to check the digital signal transmission quality in my area. The HVR-950 delivered on this and as an added bonus it also works as our DVR for recording programs we are not able to watch. We receive about 8-10 good quality signals in our rural area and have found enough programming to more than satisfy us.

Once we confirmed that there was something worth watching we bought a HDTV to watch them. This has been an exceptional experience and with the aid of a distribution amplifier we are able to record, and watch programming on several different TV's, both digital and analog.

Once in awhile a signal will break up, but that is probably related to our location, 30 miles from most towers. And this will probably get worse in the summer. But for now we are enjoying a great viewing experience.

Customer Review: failed and bad tech support
Summary: 1 Stars

The tuner failed to work on digital channels. It would lock up when I went from an analog channel to a digital channel. I emailed their tech support. I downloaded and re-installed drivers several times. I returned the tuner by mail and they sent me a new one. It did the same thing. I had been asking for my money back from the first email. But by now three months had passed. He said he could only give me my money back if I had bought it in the last 30 days!

I'm sure this thing works on some computers, however it does not work on mine. I will not buy this sort of thing through Amazon again, and I will certainly not buy anything from Hauppauge.

I drove to Best Buy and bought a Pinnacle tuner.

Tech support that wastes my time and is indifferent to failure is worse than none at all.

Customer Review: Created problems with Windows Media Player
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought two of these for our laptops. After installing the WinTV-HVR-950, the driver, and the Hauppauge application software, we now have problems playing any mpg's (other than those created by the Hauppauge TV software) using Windows Media Player. Now, only the mpg's created by the Hauppauge TV software will play correctly...everything else sounds like Mickey Mouse on steroids at high speed, and the video jumps & stalls. Oddly enough, all the mpg's will play using another mpg player such as VLC Media Player or even CyberLink PowerDVD, but nothing now plays correctly using Windows Media Player except as noted above. We actually like the Hauppauge device & TV software, but cannot understand what it did to Windows Media Player after we installed the WinTV-HVR-950. If anybody knows a fix for this, we would appreciate it.

Customer Review: Nice way to add TV to your Laptop PC
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this device to add TV capability to my Sons's laptop for use at college (One less thing to carry up 3 flights of stairs). The item worked flawlessly. The antenna is only big enough to capture very local (over the air) stations but you can set the tuner to cable and when you hookup local analog cable you get all those stations. I bought the optional remote control and connector for video input but the unit comes with a video connector so if you don't need a remote control pass on that option.
The only additional thing that would be good to see is the ability to get cable HDTV via a QAM tuner. This would make the item future proof as we move onto HDTV. Also since the unit is HD the video input connector would have been better if it supported Component video and HDMI not just Composite and S-Video.

Customer Review: Hauppage WIN 200
Summary: 4 Stars

Product meets expectations. One touch pause and one touch recording work just fine. There is a signal indicator addon which is nice but not in the product description.

Minor negatives are as follows:

If you want to use both cable and antenna (necessary for HD) a 2 for 1 splitter won't work. You need an A/B switch which is effective; hence if you want to record say a cable program, you need to remember to turn the A/B switch from the antenna.

The cable view is slightly more grainy, not terribly for cable viewing. However, if you want to convert a recorded MPEG file to MPEG4 for ipod viewing, there is no distortion
If you use the pause, you still retain the file on the hard disk. Intuitively if you pause and catchup any file on a hard disk should be discarded.
