Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of ETON Mini GM400 Super Compact AM/FM Shortwave Radio with Digital DisplayCustomer Review: Don't expect much Summary: 2 Stars
I recently got this radio on an impulse, as it is very inexpensive. I was primarily interested in the shortwave but have tested it extensively on all bands. It works marginally OK on FM and AM, and is very mediocre on shortwave. The sound quality is rather poor - but it gets better if you put it in the carrying case. The big problem, particularly on shortwave, is the tuning. To set the frequency, you have a tiny thumbwheel on the side for analog tuning (with a digital readout). The radio will tune from 5.780 to 10.59 Mhz on one band and 11.48 to 18.51 Mhz on the other band, which is decent coverage, but it takes the hands of a surgeon to hit any particular frequency with the teeny little wheel. And, just changing the pressure on the wheel will alter the frequency by 10 Khz or so. So it's just about impossible to adjust. There's not nearly the same problem with AM or FM since you are covering a much smaller range of frequencies.
The sensitivity on my particular radio is not too great, either, so I have a hard time understanding how other people have issues with overloading it. Only the stronger stations are available on any band, and even strong shortwave stations (WWV, Family Radio) are not way above the noise floor. Its absolutely hopeless on shortwave in the city, but it didn't work a whole lot better even way out in the desert compared to my other radios (Kaito 1103, Zenith Transoceanic 8g005 and B600) which had almost perfect reception and clarity, and found MANY more stations.
Another problem that is pretty much inherent and more my problem than the radios, is that half the time, I can't find it! It's *very* compact. You certainly wouldn't have any problem carrying it wherever you went. It's smaller and weighs less than the battery for the dial light on a Transoceanic.
So, it's very inexpensive and has mediocre performance, but it's good enough for strong AM and FM stations, and it's very small, so it might have a niche use. But I wouldn't recommend it for a general-purpose portable radio.
