Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Griffin SmartShare Headphone Splitter with Individual Volume ControlCustomer Review: Did what I needed. Seems like good build quality, a little expensive though Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this because my computer's headphone jack is really strong, and my headphones are really sensitive, so I had the problem of having the volume on the lowest position just to have it at a comfortable level.
So I just plugged this in, and used the inline volume control to "dim" the volume to suitable levels, and turn up the volume on the computer. The sound is better too, because the volume level of 1 on my computer has a lot of internal noise.
A few things I noticed. One, the volume controls have almost no friction, so if you bump the slider, it will move pretty easily, so make sure the max volume isn't going to make you deaf before you use this in an environment where you might bump the headphones.
Second, this works like any passive volume control. It "dims" or attenuates the power level to make it quieter. If you want this to amplify your sound, it won't. Also the maximum attenuation is not going to mute the sound. It goes to about half the volume of the max (that fraction might be dependent on your headphones).
The reason I give it four stars is that it's a little expensive for a couple potentiometers, and some plastic. I know it couldn't have cost ten bucks to make this. More like $0.30. Oh well, that's what I get for not making it myself...
Customer Review: No headphone adapter as seen in picture. Summary: 2 Stars
Based on the picture I assumed I was getting the Griffin Technology Headphone Adapter along with the splitter. I understand it wasn't in the description but I figured it was a small add-on to assist the main product the splitter with volume control. This really put a damper on my expectations since I really needed that little adapter with this piece. The actual splitter itself I'm happy to say works, but the volume control isn't that great. Basically when the volume is all the way up to max (on the splitter) it's the normal volume of what you would get without the splitter. When you lower the volume on the splitter, it doesn't lower that much and it can't be lowered all the way down to off. I think that's pretty lame. So for $[...] I really don't feel like this product was at all worth it or nice. I'm surprised for Griffin Technology. I expected more and the adapter.
I also own the Belkin F8V234-WHT-APL Headphone Splitter, which is $3 with shipping from amazon. I would recommend that over this product as it's half the price and the poor volume control isn't worth $3 extra bucks.
Customer Review: Volume control is practically meaningless Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this splitter in hopes of being able to share my MP3 player with my husband when we were out and about. We are both in our early 40s, and neither of us has hearing problems, but we do tend to like our music at different volumes, so this sounded like a win to me.
I did read some reviews, but didn't get down far enough to see that other people were having the same problem I've had ... which is that "volume control" is laughable. The range of control is VERY narrow, and I can't actually discern a difference in volume level; the only difference is that the sound quality gets a little fuzzier at one end of the slide than the other. If you were hoping and expecting, as I was, that you could actually count on hearing your music at a different volume than your "partner," DON'T.
Sound quality seemed middling to me, and was slightly different between the two ports, strangely. I paid $4.00, but then the same amount again for shipping, and would rather have spent the money to see a movie. :-(
Customer Review: Splitter works but volume control is quite frankly pathetic Summary: 2 Stars
The splitter is working great, no issue there. But the individual volume controls - the difference between the max and min settings is a joke. I was expecting it to go from loud to near muted, but instead it is always loud to ever so slighty less louder. I have a separate headphone set with its own similar sized volume slider on it and it is infinitely better. I was hoping this unit would be useful for my wife and I as we travel, so she doesn't have to listen to my Blur music, or I to her classic piano concertos when we share the iPod.
But what can you expect for $2...and this is a discontinued item by Griffin as it has been superceded by a newer version. Maybe they fixed it with that one.
Customer Review: Worked great until... Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this item for a family vacation. One of the kids has a video iPod and we wanted the kids to be able to both listen to the music during our car trip to Florida. The headphone splitter worked great, both kids were able to adjust the volume of the music independently, however the headphone splitter came apart soon after I gave it to them (within the first day). Keep in mind that I have two daughters and they were sitting right next to each other (I have a Honda Pilot, so it's not a HUGE space in the backseat). Both are pretty calm kids, so there was no roughhousing going on, I just think the weld was weak on the splitter.
