The Sony Reader offers convenience for those who can find their choice of reading material in the Reader Store, on Google Books or in downloaded PDF articles. However, once the battery goes dead, the convenience is lost. I keep my Reader plugged into the charger whenever I am not carrying the Reader with me. After the initial 8 hour start-up charge, my reader restores its battery in 2 hours or so. There does not seem to be any harm to the Reader by leaving it plugged in for longer periods. I have had my Reader for almost a year and have not had any battery problems.
Without re-charging on a regular basis, the Reader has a useable life of about 10 - 12 hours. Estimating reading an average of 2 hours per day, that would be about a week. Yes, the promo ads say something like 70 hrs - but that is dependent on number of page turns and other features that are used. During my initial use of the Reader, I observed that I was down to 1 bar on the battery indicator and page turns were getting very slow at about one week of usage.
There is an AC adaptor that comes with the unit but it is not of the same quality as this unit and I believe the instructions cautioned about leaving it plugged in. The Gomatic is worth the price for the peace of mind it provides.
