Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GlobalSat BU-353 Waterproof USB GPS ReceiverCustomer Review: Easy Summary: 5 Stars
Read the driver CD Jacket about configuring the port etc and thought here we go for a long setup. I loaded the driver took about 2 minutes plugged the devise into USB shut the cover on the lap top walk to the living room set the device on he table by the west window (first floor of two story)opened the computer hit the start device button on MS Streets and before my finger left the button it had located my house with 6 satellites. Wow I cannot wait to route calls for tomorrow I have been using MS Streets without a receiver this one seem great.
Customer Review: Mac users rejoice! Summary: 5 Stars
The BU-353 can be used with BOTH OS 9 and 10. The latest PL-2303 drivers can be found here: http://www.prolific.com.tw/eng/downloads.asp?ID=31
With the OS 9 extension, I am using it with Street Atlas 6.0 Mac in classic mode. It takes about 6 seconds from a cold start to a 3d fix. The PowerBook or iBook can be put to sleep and still continues to track on waking. The BU-353 continues to track even in buildings where DeLorme's Earthmate with serial to USB adapter is a dead loss. The Globalsat BU-353 is a great product.
Customer Review: works great Summary: 4 Stars
I am using this on a laptop running vista. It works great w/ delorme software. I was initially having problems using it with google earth (blue screen). I adjusted settings as some have suggested - did not work for me. I ended up installing "Earth Bridge" which is 'donationware'. It solved the problem and now I can use google earth and the BU-353 with no problems. Just adjust the preferences in EB to match those in Windows Device Manager for the BU-353 and then launch GE from EB after that.

Customer Review: gpsd ready Summary: 4 Stars
I have tried this product both on Debian GNU/Linux and on Windows XP. It was detected (without having to load a module) and usable on linux immediately. I used it with gpsd without a problem. In Windows, however, I was disappointed that I needed the disk to install the virtual serial port. I was really hoping that it would be generic enough that I could use it on any computer without having to haul around a driver disk. Still, this product was intended to work on a Linux box with gpsd, so it won't affect me.
Customer Review: Nice external GPS option Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to use with my laptop for mapping software. While I have not done any benchmark comparisons, the BU-353 seems to be more sensitive than other GPS receivers I have used, including those built-in to devices like cellphones and dedicated GPS receivers. The suction cup let's you place it where it will get the best signal, and it is very simple to setup with most software I have used it with.
I have not found any drawbacks with this device. Great price, performs well, I recommend it.
