Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GlobalSat BU-353 Waterproof USB GPS ReceiverCustomer Review: Lucky me picked the right product Summary: 5 Stars
I read some review indicating the technology behind the product may be over-the-hill. I thought GlobalSat ND-100 might be a better choice, but finally decided to use a proven product. I never own other GPS device before, but the experience of using GlobalSat BU-353 in the US is excellent - very sensitive and accurate. Just be patient to wait for less than a minute to get the signal after connection. I'll use it in Europe in the coming days, that'll be the real test.
Buyer beware: My friend bought the ND-100, turn out he got a global version that sends out signal at baud rate 38400. Need to jump over the hoop to convert that back to 4800 to fit the software that uses the US standard.
Customer Review: top choice GPS Summary: 5 Stars
If you want a good WAAS enabled GPS reciever for a laptop, this is it. Widows Vista recognised it and set it up automatically as COM4. I downloaded the GPSinfo diagnostic utility from their website. From a cold start in my living room it had my position within 1 minute and was tracking 9 satilites within 2 minutes. From a warm start it was maybe 1 second. Unless you fly to another country or climb inside a steel water tank, by the time you boot up your computer, you will have a solid fix. As long as it isn't mounted directly to the laptop, the signal strength is excellent. The brand and website are not printed on the product, so if you forget who makes it in the future, have fun finding their website.
Customer Review: Casual User Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this a month ago and had a chance to really test it out on a short weekend trip recently. The GPS worked seamlessly with my map software and tracked my car down the highway. When I was sitting still, it isn't deadly accurate. My altitude would change by 10 ft up or down and my exact spot would move around a lot but when I was moving down the highway it tracked me right down the road. It had my speed and altitude in the mountains and held on to the satellite signal. It was very quick to get a lock on satellites also. I was locked up again within seconds of exiting tunnels in the mountains. It is a great little gadget for a casual user who doesn't want to spend $300 on a GPS navigator.
Customer Review: Great little GPS and very rugged Summary: 5 Stars
I already have about 6 handheld GPS's, all which would have worked for me (but required more wires & space in my backpack) but I bought this one for convenience to go with my new Eee PC and Microsoft Streets. As other reviewers reported, it is amazingly good at getting a signal. When I first tried it, it actually got a signal INSIDE my hotel room (I am normally standing out in the parking lot with my GPS muttering 'acquire, acquire'.
It is also very well built... solid feeling, etc. Not cheaply made. Worth a little extra, IMHO.
It also works fine with all my marine navigation programs like Maxsea, The Capn, Nobeltec, etc. Very nice backup unit in a very small package.
Customer Review: Very Accurate! Summary: 5 Stars
In conjunction with Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009 I was able to travel from northwest Arkansas all the way to Panama City Beach, Florida and back in no time during spring break 2009. I received up to a maximum of 11 satellite signals which was quite impressive. The powerful magnet on the back sticks to your car's metal surface firmly while the rubber seal keeps it from moving around. I traveled with it to PCB dry and came back in a dark and stormy night across three different states. The rain was ridiculous. I couldn't see 5 feet in front of me and there were floods everywhere but the USB GPS keeps on ticking! Did I mention it was waterproof? I'd highly recommend this product to anyone!
