Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of GiSTEQ PhotoTrackrT for Digital CamerasCustomer Review: Not there yet Summary: 2 Stars
Great idea but the software doesn't work well on a Mac and it's difficult to get the time stamps to sync with the camera if you're shooting a lot of photos. This means that locations don't match exactly with the photos. Also, the software repeatedly crashes and log files seem to get corrupted easily. Can't wait for GPS chips to be built directly into cameras (with no external attachments). What's holding things up with Nikon, Canon, et. al.?
Customer Review: GiSTEK photo tracker Summary: 4 StarsCool device, probably the best on the market, but the GUI leaves room for improvement. It tracks your travels whether you are taking pictures or not which makes sense. Desert motorcycling or walking in the city are recorded with exact speed and location.
6/6/09 I used it on a driving trip from Germany to Montenegro via the Italian alps, Croatia and Bosnia. Results: Very fast satellite aquistion, line of sight is not necessary but it kind of gets lost in long tunnels and wants to talk about it. It will run for a few days without recharging, but I also lost a few days. Maybe it wasn't turned on? GiSTEK: There needs to be a separate switch and very small LED indicating that it is on. I had the confusing kaleidascope of flashing colors turned off and the voice turned down. So charge it each day and if you miss a day, don't panic.
Also keep the tracking at every 10-15 seconds, I had tuned the device to track every hour or so and it gave me exactly what I asked for, which was an erratic track. There is plenty of memory so I won't make that mistake again.
Other than my learning experiences, it is a great device with good software.
Customer Review: Great tool, but documentation is limited Summary: 4 StarsAs a Mac user, the documentation and instructions for using this product is rather limited. I had to explore on my own a few times to figure out how to use certain features. That said, I am very happy with the device. It does a good job of tracking where I am when I shoot photos and once learned, it is very easy to add the GPS tags to my photos. The battery lasted longer than I expected and the unit alerts you when the battery charge is low (something that was not clear in the instructions). As an Apple iPhoto user I can't comment on the photo editing features. I bought it to add the GPS tagging only.
Customer Review: Great for keeping track of photos Summary: 4 StarsI did a lot of research into this product before buying, and I'm happy I went ahead with it. I've tested it in a variety of applications:
1) Walking/hiking: accurate within about 10m - works better in rural environments due to less building interference, and allows you to bookmark where you took some really nice shots.
2) Jogging: accuracy really fell off - I imagine it has something to do with it bumping around on the lanyard on my neck - it was as much as a block off sometimes.
3) Driving: stuck to the roads pretty well with the occasional spike off the road (I sure don't remember going 138 mph for 1 second).
I've already taken this thing out on a few geocaching and beach trips (I'm also kind of curious if a few ziplock bags around it would render it waterproof - perhaps I'll add "underwater performance" later), and I'm really looking forward to taking it to China and India this summer.
My favorite website to use with this thing is Picasa, though using the included software to post your pictures is a little buggy - you're better off just using the web album interface directly or downloading the Picasa client if you have a lot of pictures (>5) you want to put up.
Customer Review: Good, but with reservations Summary: 3 StarsGisteq and its software work very well. The gps aquires satellites quickly, even indoors. The software imports photos and matches them with the tracks from the gps very well.
Seeing the photo locations displayed on a map is a real kick. And that is the one week point in the system. It can only dispay a map if you have and account with google, ok that is free, for now, and only while your connected to the internet.
There is no map display available without an active internet connection. An option to use some other map source would greatly improve the usefulness of the Gisteq system.
