Customer Review: frustrating but works, kind of

i got this a while ago and just recently found a use for it, hence the review now.
first off, server 2003 wont recognize any drives attached to it. driver availability is abysmal to be kind. xp wont see drives attached. ubuntu didnt see drives, list goes on bcz i have a computer lab at home with about every o/s you can imagine installed or in vm.
finally i was presented with the problem of what to do with the multitude of sataI drives i have been replacing. i chose to make a nas box using freenas, sitting on an old socket A mobo [dfi lanboy] bcz this was the only sock A board i had with 4 sata ports on it, so this would give it 6. in cruising the freenas forums i saw this chipset listed as supported and i jumped at the chance to try it. btw, freenas is based on FreeBSD.
so end result, after some initial growing pains, some time on the shelf gathering dust, this part has been purposed, and excels at its function. this is not for people looking for pnp parts with generous driver support. but it works perfect in the scenario i described above, which is adding more internal sataI ports to a tweaked freebsd called FreeNAS. data transfer across a network is just as fast as the drives on the motherboard sata connections, a bit less when both drives on the card are being accessed simultaneously.
im really quite happy with the result and it reinforces my old motto, nvr throw away comp parts, even if it makes your house look like an electronics warehouse xD
