Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video

Customer Review: Doesn't Work.
Summary: 1 Stars

My LCD TV is dying so I thought instead of buying a new TV, I'd just save money and use my old LCD PC monitor to play video games on.

I came on here, read some reviews, and there were two featured reviews that were pretty much negative and claiming user error/wrong application of product and another that claims to have gotten this item to work using their xbox. I thought "Hell yea, If it worked for him, then it should work for me as well using a ps3." I hung on to that glimmer of hope and ran with it. I should have read more reviews, not to mention the comments on that one review.

Delivery was speedy. Arrived in a few days, and I was anxious to finally be able to play on my ps3 again. Plugged everything up, and What do you know? "Check input cable...Check input cable...Check input cable," is the message I'm getting regardless of what I do to remedy the situation. It doesn't work. Nothing wrong with my ps3/monitor, the cable just doesn't work.

I have a 250g PS3 Slim and an old HP LCD monitor. Maybe because my monitors old...though I doubt it, but I ordered a new monitor not too long ago, and it should be here within two weeks or so...When I do get it, I'll update this review accordingly. For the time being though, my recommendation regarding this product is not to get it if your plan is to hook it up to a console.

Customer Review: Perhaps I was confused?

The product description here looks pretty straightforward. "VGA Adapter to TV S-Video RCA Out Cable for PC Video" seems to imply that this would be used to send a video signal from a PC to a television screen. The reviews seem to say that this does not work.

At least one review said the adapter worked for the purpose of sending a video signal from a game console (Xbox 360) to a computer screen, which is what I wanted to do and the reason I bought this. However, I am unable to use this cable in either way. I tried with several consoles (NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube) to connect to my VGA monitor without success. Just to be sure, I tried to use the adapter to connect my laptop to a TV, which doesn't work either.

I'm a fairly capable guy, but I really can't tell whether I bought a junk product that does nothing or if it has some mysterious function which I haven't imagined. Searching around the internet, it seems that you need some kind of signal converter box in order to connect a RCA console to a VGA input, rather than a simple adapter plug.

I don't really know. I'm just going to call this a $7 lesson and save up for a screen with RCA inputs next time. Buyer beware, I guess, or just do more research than I did.

Customer Review: Doesn't even work with GTX 260
Summary: 1 Stars

Despite the negative reviews I bought one of these. I thought, "These people probably don't know what they're doing I'll be fine." I tried the cable with my laptop which was the reason I bought it and, like others, my laptop said it couldn't find an external monitor. I have used the vga on my monitor to connect directly to my HDTV before just fine so I knew it should work. I tried using the s-video end as well as the RCA end (trying both the yellow cable and connecting all three despite the fact that VGA doesn't transmit audio) both with no luck.

The only 5 star review for this product says that you need to support TV Out (my laptop does) and that you need software (my laptop should). Taking my testing one step further I tried to use this product with my GTX260 a fairly new graphics card on my desktop computer and it still did not work.

I think I can confidently say that this product (and possibly all similar products) does not work. There are only two slightly positive reviews for this product and neither of them provide any form of helpful information for how to get it to work. I think amazon should remove the product from the website as it does not work for the majority of purchasers, if at all.

Customer Review: Weird Wiring = Won't Work
Summary: 1 Stars

This is one really weird cable, on one side of it you have a VGA HD 15 connector, which is strictly a monitor cable (with no audio component) and on the next side you get video and audio outputs!

Here is the typical breakdown for a standard HD15 port:

Pin 1 RED Red video
Pin 2 GREEN Green video
Pin 3 BLUE Blue video
Pin 4 ID2/RES formerly Monitor ID bit 2, reserved since E-DDC
Pin 5 GND Ground (HSync)
Pin 6 RED_RTN Red return
Pin 7 GREEN_RTN Green return
Pin 8 BLUE_RTN Blue return
Pin 9 KEY/PWR formerly key, now +5V DC
Pin 10 GND Ground (VSync, DDC)
Pin 11 ID0/RES formerly Monitor ID bit 0, reserved since E-DDC
Pin 12 ID1/SDA formerly Monitor ID bit 1, IC data since DDC2
Pin 13 HSync Horizontal sync
Pin 14 VSync Vertical sync
Pin 15 ID3/SCL formerly Monitor ID bit 3, IC clock since DDC2

So, it is quite clear that this cable will not do what it appears that it can do, that is produce audio signals from a strictly video signal. I recommend that you consider, a converter box instead, it may cost you more, but you are sure that it will do what it is supposed to.

Customer Review: None of you have a clue!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you think you can take VGA and connect it to a composite (yellow), or S-Video (4-pin Din), input of your display, you know nothing at all about audio visual and do not deserve your money back. Understand that VGA has three color channels, RGB - Red, Green, and Blue, along with Horizontal and Vertical sync channels. This means you have to have 5 conductors (wires) to send this signal. If you think a cable can magically take those five channels, at high resolution, and convert it to 1 single chanel (composite - yello), or even 2 channels (S-Video - Luminance and Chrominance), then you must be an idiot. This cable is simply meant for a source device that can output composite video, or S-Video, through its VGA connector. It simply means it is using the VGA conectors pins to pass compoiste or S-Video. If the specifications of your device do not say you can do this, this cable will do nothing for you. Quit bashing things that you cannot comprehend. Just because you think a unit can do what you want it to, simply by looking at it, does not mean you should talk crap when it does not do what you "tought". Study something before buying next time.
