If you need/want a charger to charge your Smartphone, this charger may not be the right charger...
I purchased this charger mainly due to the price. I was inexperienced with USB car chargers. I assumed that "USB is USB". I was sadly wrong.
Normal "PC" based USB ports have a maximum current draw of 500 mA at 5 volts. Most new smart phones now use (but do not require) at least that to change quickly.
I have/use a Dell Streak (very nice phone BTW). I plugged this charger into to my car, the red LED shows that it is functioning (supposedly), I plug my phone in, the phone briefly flashes, but the phone does not go into "charge mode." This unit does not have a specification published for the maximum amount of current your phone may draw.
I purchased a charger that advertised a charging current of 1 Amp for $13 (4+ times the cost of this unit) at a local store, and it charges my phone.
This charger may work on a "regular" phone, but it does not work with the Dell Streak.
(Due to the cost of this unit, I did not even attempt to send this back and/or ask for a refund. I would spend more than the $2.71 on cell charges and gasoline to sent this back)
I gave 2 stars as it may work with regular phones, just not in my case (i.e. it looks like it does function).
