Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Mini DisplayPort to DVI-I Female Adapter for MacCustomer Review: Stay away from this product Summary: 1 Stars
In the past I used a 17" Macbook and a DVI-HDMI cable from xtrememac.com, which worked perfectly fine.
The cables from xtrememac are very solid with a good quality.
Since I bought new Macbook Pro I was forced to add a connector from the Mini Display Port to a DVI female adapter, which I connect with my old extrememac cable.
Observations:
1. The cable was not assembled properly and the symbols for the connectors where on opposite side. Nothing what would impact the function however poor quality.
2. After opening the package I noticed that the silver foil, which shields the cable was already exposed.
3. After plugging the cable into the Macbook and the TV the Mac recognized that a display was added by showing the blue screen for a couple of seconds but the TV didn't respond.
I'm using a Panasonic G1 HDTV 37"
So I played around for 2 hours and got annoyed. Then I went to an Apple store tested the connector, which confirmed my suspicion that the connector was defective. Dead product out of the box
Hence I bought a $29 cable from the Apple store and everything is working fine.
During my research I found some interesting things I would like to share:
1. It seems that all of the connectors for DVI to HDMI are only useable for digital signals, hence cannot be used for analog devices
2. If the Mac doesn't recognize the TV you might need to re-boot, connect the adapter and then turn on the TV.
I didn't have this problem with the Apple Adapter but it was mentioned on various support sides.
3. With the DVI to HDMI connection you will only get a video signal and no audio however with a toslink cable you can get audio. A more elegant solution is from KANEX $69, which supports HDMI1.3 which allows you to have audio and video via the HDMI adapter. A good idea if you don't want to go via your A/V receiver.
Lesson learnt:
Don't go cheap with the adapter, you only buy it once (if you do it right) and $20 more is definitely worth the time wasted and aggravation you can avoid.
Good luck everyone
