Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of HDMI Splitter Amplifier 1 In to 2 Out Dual DisplayCustomer Review: Don't split to receiver and to TV Summary: 2 Stars
My purpose for this was to enable my wife to turn on the TV for background entertainment during the day while she works on her laptop, without turning on the receiver. She does not care to get Dolby Digital and would mostly watch news programs just with tv speakers. Also, leaving off the receiver cuts down heat in the room and power consumption too.
So two HDMI wires would go to the tv from the DVR through this splitter. One would go from the DVR to the TV through the splitter, and the other would go from the DVR through the TV through the receiver. I bought a second unit so I could do the same with my blu-ray player.
At night when we would play a movie, we (I) would want Dolby Digital or DTS. So, with me on hand, I would turn on the receiver and switch inputs on the tv to receive the hdmi from the receiver rather than directly (through the splitter) from the DVR. Then before turning off the tv and receiver, I would switch back to the regular input and then she would simply turn the TV on without any complications the next day.
So I tried this with the DVR. I hooked up both my TV and receiver as outputs from our DVR. Then I ran into the problem.
The problem with this unit is that when the TV is plugged into one output and a receiver is plugged into the other output, the sound the receiver produces reverts to stereo only. When I unplug the TV and then unplug/replug in the receiver, I get Dolby Digital without any problems. When I plug the TV back in, the sound becomes stereo again.
So if you use this from your DVR to the splitter, and the splitter to a flat panel wonderful tv and to a receiver, then you can kiss your fine sound goodbye. It almost seems like the "dumber" output lowers the standard for the sound capabilities of the other "smarter" output too.
I bought two of these and so now I am probably faced with a 15% restocking fee and lost shipping charges as well as return postage. Grrr. This borders on false advertising.
It seems to me that my attempt should be a fairly typical installation. Perhaps others can avoid such a problem. I know that this was an inexpensive unit, but I had to buy 4 HDMI cords too! Huge waste.
By the way, this splitter has NO requirement of any devices being on already when plugging it in, contrary to earlier messages. Perhaps they had an earlier version. If you have two televisions and don't need to send the signal to a receiver for dolby digital, I would give this 5 stars. No muss, no fuss, no strange procedures, but no dolby digital if you split to a tv and receiver! :(
