Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Flexible 5.0 Megapixel USB PC Camera Webcam with MicrophoneCustomer Review: Cheapo camera, nice stand Summary: 3 Stars
First of all, this is NOT a "5 megapixel" camera. Rather it is the standard fare 300k-pixel webcam (max 640x480) that every cheap gadget company sells. I don't think it could even interpolate the image to get "5 megapixels". It comes with no driver CD, but rather uses UVC for webcam communications. I was able to get it to work with the built-in drivers of Windows 7 (64bit) and Ubuntu Linux (9.x), so if you want it for either OS you should be okay. That said, the generic driver does not allow you to adjust gain, white balance, exposure, or really do much other than run the camera in "auto" mode. This will be fine for most people, but I am still on the lookout for a cheap webcam that allows full control.
There are supposedly specific drivers that work with this camera; this particular camera uses a Sigma Micro chip with a 0x1C4F vendor ID (PID 3002). Still, I was not able to get them to work on Windows 7, mostly because they're unsigned drivers. I even opened up the webcam to see if I could use the chipset to find a better driver. I don't think they'd give me more capabilities anyway. If you want to attempt this you'll need to look up the vendor ID yourself, because these camera manufacturers are rarely consistent with the chips they use.
There are two things I like about this webcam: the body, and the ability for manual focus. The body is great. It has a bendable neck and microphone, and a suction cup on the bottom to fix it to your desk. Simply put the suction cup on the desk and rotate the base, and the spring mechanism will pull on the suction cup, causing it to hold to the desk. It works remarkably well. Unlike even cheaper cameras, this webcam uses a focusable lens that is easy to adjust. The lens does have some major chromatic aberration problems, but being a webcam, I'll let that slide.
Overall, the price is about what the camera delivers. I was disappointed, though not surprised, that this camera did not even come close to its "5 megapixel" name, but otherwise, it's a decent generic camera, with a nice body.
