Customer Review: Great Unit... for much less than ExpoDisc but same end result

I use the 77mm verson on the Canon L series 24mm USM II lens. The cap is a snug fit so not easy to get it on and off... pulling on one edge of it pulls it right off but if it is cold out (20 deg F or so) the plastic stiffens a bit and probably shrinks and it is harder to get off. That is my only complaint. When I use it in the cold I just barely put it on... just so it doesn't fall off. Since you are only shooting a reference shot with it... it doesn't matter so much.
I am concerned that the air pressure created in pressing this on could push dust into the lens system or camera... that I would recommend venting it with some pin holes (hot pin on a stove held with a pliars). Or add a UV filter as a "clear" protector to the front of you lens would be a better choice.
The other thing I don't like is there is a company logo "MENNEN" in the middle of the plastic. It may make no difference and I shoot my reference frame set to focus to infinity but I am concerned that may impact the efficiency of this unit... the proof is in the pudding however... and I am gettng very exacting color balance now. So maybe no concern. The ExpoDisc does use an internal fresnel to break up the light some more however.
I am using this as a lens cap when the camera is not in use. Here is somehting to think about for you prefectionists out there... plastics tend to yellow over time and exposure to UV light. You probably want to take a reference shot with this under some controlled and repeatable lighting condition (like point it at the sun on a blue sky day) and take a shot for compare later so you can see if it is yellowing. Otherwide you color balance could balance towards blue more and more over time.
Now the good stuff...
It operates as advertised.... I am doing white balancing on-the-scene and with just a few extra seconds to take the reference shot and set the menu to point to it. If I am in the same room and same lighting I don't take another reference but I am congizant of fluroescent vs. incadescent lighting and in some locations there is both so just walking across the room changes the light color from bluish to yellowish. Got to take another reference.
The color balance in my photos is superb now... fantastic. I have no complaints. You can't beat the price.... go look at Expodisc... they are over $100 each!!
