Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Gary Fong Puffer Pop Up Flash Diffuser - CANON/NIKON

Customer Review: Somewhat less sturdy than it could be...
Summary: 4 Stars

I would rate this product on its effectiveness as a portable pop-up defusing lens as a 4/5. it is very good at what it does on a small scale.

however, as many people have noted, the piece whereby the foot meets the shoe for holding the puffer in place is just a little too rigid to last a lifetime, let alone a couple of years.

A more flexible composite material with a metal shiv or some other supporting material inside of it would allow for a more flexible base while still maintaining the body of the material...or using a higher impact plastic material.

I complain about this as, if you attempt to throw this in your bag, it WILL get crushed... it has not yet but i feel it will happen any day now. maybe i will be proven wrong.

Customer Review: Nifty gadget
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently purchased a Lumiquest soft screen and absolutely hated its floppiness and poor fit not to mention the hotspot that resulted when using it. So on to the Puffer. Not only does the Puffer look cool, but more importantly it works. I've only had it for a couple of days, but I have been pleased with the results. Perhaps I got one of the redesigned versions, but mine certainly seems to be quite sturdy. I am using it with my Canon SX1 IS and it fits well and it seems to me as though one would have to make a concerted effort to break it. I am pleased with both the effectiveness and the solid build of the Puffer. I've noticed no hot spots when using it. I would definitely recommend this to a friend. I really don't think that one could do better for the price.

Customer Review: Does exactly what it's designed to do.
Summary: 5 Stars

The first step to great flash photography is to get the light source off the camera. You can bounce the flash or physically remove the flash from the camera and trigger it using a cable or wireless device, or some combination of the two, but get the light source off the camera.

Having said that, most DSLR's come with a pop-up flash for a reason. Pop-up flash CAN be useful for fill flash and for casual use where dramatic flash lighting techniques are not required or are too cumbersome. For these purposes the Gary Fong Puffer is great. I'm very pleased with the results. It does exactly what it's designed to do and that's to diffuse the light coming from that tiny little light source on the top of your camera.

Customer Review: Much Better Quality Now
Summary: 5 Stars

I see a few reviews about the cheap mount, well that has changed! I had the same problem and they were great about quickly replacing it at no charge to me (twice). The new mount is much stronger and I've had no further problems with it. In fact I pretty much keep it on my camera. You need to keep in mind that if you are more than 15 feet from your subject it might weaken the flash too much, however under that what you get is great! It get's rid of the harsh flash effect and renders a very soft flash that looks great. I have no problem recomending this product! For those of you out there with a broken bracket, contact Gary Fong and you will find them great to work with and they will make sure you are happy!

Customer Review: On Nikons - use a dremmel. THEN it will fit correctly
Summary: 4 Stars

It does what it's designed to do - diffuse the harsh light of the pop-up flashes.

However, the black plastic is of low quality and will break if you try to force it.
I found that the foot will not slide easily into Nikon hot-shoes. What I did was sand down the nub, and the side wall a bit with a small drum attachment on my Dremmel. NOW it fits. It should slide in pretty easily, DO NOT force it.

As another revier siad, it's also hard to fir the nubs of the black part into the white part. Here I simply used a TINY bit of grease. (You do NOT want to use to much, or you will get it all over your camera/lens). Here to, do NOT force it.

After all this, it will work great!
