Customer Review: Remote Transmitter Unreliable.
Summary: 3 Stars

Voice recognition is a great idea. For the most part the unit does a good job of interpreting speech. If there is a lot of noise (even the car air conditioning fan), it can interfere with the Garmin 880 understanding what you say. The speakers in the Garmin 880 should be louder. It is sometimes hard to hear verbal directions over road noise. The FM transmitter is of very poor quality - not really powerful enough to send a quality signal to the radio antenna just two feet away. The biggest complaint is that the remote speech recognition transmitter will not activate the speech recognition mode of the Garmin 880 every single time. Many times you have to push the transmitter button up to 5 times to get the 880 to respond. I have tried two different Garmin 880s and the problem existed on both units. This is especially bad when you see a detour coming up and you push the remote to say "DETOUR" but the 880 won't respond and go into the voice recognition mode. There is no hard or soft key to activate speech recognition - only the remote transmitter. For the price of the Garmin Nuvi 880 you would think that Garmin would correct this problem before placing the unit on the market!

Customer Review: Great Product But For One Thing
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my second nuvi, passed my 680 on to a family member. Got it for the hands-free. I'm delighted with the nuvi series, except the audio for hands-free Bluetooth phone is awful. They supposedly designed the 880 with two speakers <my 680 had only one>. But in order to hear the party on the other end, I must have the radio down, windows up, and AC on low. And yes, I had the audio out set to 100% volume.

Maps are Navteq with their old data (even with the 2009 software). Hands-free is great, I mounted the remote button at the bottom inside of my steering wheel for lease interference. I'm in a fringe MSN Direct coverage area, but I do get gas prices, stock reports, news headlines fairly well, and I expect coverage will only widen in time <since I got the lifetime subscription>.

I may go back to my Plantonics Bluetooth headset and just deactivate the phone part of the 880, but that's the only real fault I can find with the product (and shame on Garmin for not testing and fixing this in advance). If they'd put a mini output jack on the mount for the vehicle, at least one could stick a small speaker on the dash.

Customer Review: Good GPS, but some issues found
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this unit because I wanted the MSN Direct link with updated information, traffic, etc as well as the ability to 'talk' to the GPS while driving and these features work great. Where I find my greatest disappintment is with the advanced waring of upcoming turns or exits on the highways. I have found several times the information spoken is not correct and it comes much too late to make any changes. What I mean by this is the unit tald me to stay to the left for an exit, but once we got to 20 feet before the actual exit it said to exit on the right. I also feel the announcements for turns should be given with greater distance from the turn or exit. It seems that you are always at the intersection or exit before it lets you know "This is where you turn or exit". I wish Garmin would make it announce with a little more time or distance from the turn or exit. I hope I have said this enough. Overall the rest of system seems to work well. (I was told by a friend as a comparison the 660 calculates routes much faster than the 880) I hope Garmin comes up with a firmware update to change the announcment distance to give you time to react.

Customer Review: Garmin not worth it anymore
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had the 880 for 2 years now and thought i would write a review to steer people away from this product. I would imagine the whole Nuvi line is based on the same specs (cpu, internals) so this would apply to the whole line of Nuvi products.

Overall i rate this product a 1 star and would not recomend it to anyone. I have loved Garmin products in the past especially the street pilot series which i still use over the nuvi series. This Nuvi line is of poor quality. My 880 has gone back to garmin on 2 occasions and still has quite a few problems.

My newest issue is that it decides to stop working and lock up on long trips. This happens without notice, so picture yourself driving on a long highway and not noticing the unit has stopped working. Meanwhile your turn off has long passed. This goes easily unnoticed as you only glance at the unit every once in a while when driving.

All in all, i would avoid the Garmin line and try another brand. These Nuvi units are GARBAGE. I am not sure what is good out there, but will research Magellan and some others if i were you.

Customer Review: The Best GPS
Summary: 5 Stars

This is probably he best portable GPS out there right now. I previously had a NUVI 660 which was also great, but without MSN Direct ot Voice Recognition. The voice recognition is terrific, and I was amazed at how it could recognize different voices with the same results. You activate the voice recognition with a button device that fastens around the steering wheel. It's a little awkward and sometimes gets in the way when I am in a turn. I compensated for this by rotating the button down on the inboard side of the steering wheel so that all you feel is the strap that holds it to the wheel. If the passenger is navigating, you have to tell the driver to push the button. It would be nice to have another button located on the passenger side somewhere. You have to turn the radio down, and close the windows for VR to work properly, but that's the nature of them all. MSN Direct works as advertized, and I especially like the Gas Prices feature. All-in-all it's pricey, but that's the way they market the new and improved items. If you want the latest, and greatest, this is the one.
